So every forty-eight hours, Karen gets blood tests and a consult with the haemologist. (I kinda want to say haemiatrician, but I know that's wrong.) Two days ago, her white bloodcell count was 800, and she was officially in neutropenia; today it was 400, so we are double or half or whatever. Twice as sunk. I wish there was something I could do. Know that you two are on my mind a great deal. I've known Karen since the eighties. She's a strong woman. I know you only a little, but I am impressed at how wonderful you've been together with her. Here's me, crossing my fingers, bowing my head, and hoping for a strong, healthy Karen.

You and Karen are both doing hard things here. It's not nice, feeling sick, but at least you are not fretting to be doing other things. I'm glad you've got Kipling.

The last time I had more than a day or two for reading-while-not-able-to-do-other-things I read about half of Diana Wynne Jones entire output. That helped.
