Happy TG!

Thanksgiving at my sister's was very nice. The food came out great, and we spent the day watching the entire original Star Wars trilogy, plus the first few eps of Firefly. That is how you do it, all I gotta say ( Read more... )

i agree with you about a LOT of this. i miss s1 female characters -- how much more did kat kick ass than bela? i do think that the focus on recurring female characters/sex interests is also pressure from the network -- they've been trying to get sam'n'dean gfs for several seasons now. maybe this is sera gamble's twisted idea of a compromise?

and i think we talked about this, but that was my biggest complaint with ruby (and bela, for sure), espcially in s3, was how USELESS they were. there were definately more economical ways of giving us information without diverging into uninteresting subplots.

A lot of these thoughts gelled for me during our conversation, especially the way Ruby and Bela didn't add as much to the mytharc as they could have.

Good point about pressure from the network. That was definitely a factor in these problems, and I probably should have pointed that out. I wonder how seasons 2 and 3 would have been different without that gf requirement?

(And OMG, I love Kat! She was so incredibly believable.)

Btw, I have a suspicion my last PM to you might have been eaten by LJ or something.... Wanna hang out sometime this week?

what do you wanna do?

I have no idea! :D Maybe a movie or something? You mentioned an arcade before, which sounds neat. What do you feel like?

(Oh, and which day would be best, so I can plan ahead?)

My reaction to Ruby is indifference. I just don't care. I didn't care a lot during season 3 but I found myself being intrigued at times about what her character could have done for the plot. When this season she ended being the demon Sam slept with, it was disappointing. I'm tolerating her right now, and I still hope she's not just a lovestruck demon who rememebrs how it was to be human TM, but I realize that I'm grasping at straws and that's what Ruby is. How lame, I say. I think they lost the chance to make the character interesting and to forward the plot ( ... )

I was so looking forward to the episode and instead I got a omg! it's bad, dirty, wrong sex, let's do it!

That was exactly my experience with the ep. I'd been just spoiled enough about the ep that I expected some really good Sam angst, maybe some deep revelations about him. It was disappointing not to get that. I probably wouldn't have minded the Sam/Ruby sex if not for that lack of Sam's introspection. *sigh*

I think they lost the chance to make the character interesting and to forward the plot.

I agree totally. It's not that I dislike Ruby; it's that I dislike the casual relationship she has to the plot. By this point, she should have _done_ something, y'know?

They're setting wonderful potential for conflicts and then it's like they're stepping back from them, as if they're scared of going all the way through.

Yup. The individual episodes are fun and interesting and even contribute to larger series-wide themes, but the pacing of the mytharc is driving me nuts! It's like, do something already! Sam and Dean can take it!

I think Ruby's ole in the mytharc is "aspiring kingmaker." She doesn't appear to be a powerful or influential demon -- whenever we see her interacting with other demons, they mainly tend to sneer at her and smack her around. If Hell was a megacorporation, she'd be the mail room clerk. She wants to move up, but she can't do it herself, so she's pinned her hopes on Sam. If Sam takes over Hell, chances are he'll treat Ruby nicely and allow her to have some influence, which will make her way better off than she was before ( ... )

I like your explanation of Ruby, although your mail room clerk analogy has me imagining her in the lead role in "How to Make It in Business Without Really Trying" and wondering whether Katie Cassidy knows how to sing. *g* Seriously, though, yes. Aspiring kingmaker works great for her, and seen through that lens, her role in the mytharc is pretty important. I also take your point about her effect on Sam's powers ( ... )
