i'm now wondering if maybe mary's soul is in hell, and crowley's using it as a carrot to get samuel to do his bidding - he'll set her free and let her go up to heaven if samuel finds purgatory for him. i don't think samuel would be trying to bring her back, and in fact i hope he isn't, mostly because i agree with you that all her power lies in her absence. she's always been an ideal and a catalyst more than an actual character, and at this point the boys have gotten so far away from avenging her death that i'm not sure her reanimation would have as huge an impact as if it had happened sooner. and i think the show would screw it up. and honestly, after what happened to sam, do you think the boys would actually trust it really was mary? bringing her back from the dead seems like asking for trouble

It's almost certain the show would screw it up, but in the past they have tended to handle Mary's appearances with care and respect for her place in the mythos. It might be the one thing they've been consistent on, now that I think of it. And when show does something right, they really hit it out of the park. So I'm kinda intrigued.
Mary in hell would be a good possibility, but what if Mary's in Purgatory? When she died, she became a ghost and then later destroyed herself, and if that's where all the supernatural folk go when they die, then maybe ghosts go there too? IDK, but it's so much fun to consider.
