Oh my God. I'm stunned. As a fangirl, I feel completely ashamed of myself.

I've just had it pointed out to me by utopian_sky that Rupert Penry-Jones plays St John Rivers in the 1997 Hinds/Morton version of Jane Eyre. Which may not seem particularly shocking to most of you. But I love that movie. I love it. I've seen it so many times I can't tell you. I adore ( Read more... )

I mean, was it the hair?
I don't think so.

The smarminess?
No.

The fact that he wasn't Mr Rochester?
Yes, I think that's it! Or it is simply the hair! *g*

I think, in all honesty, it's the fact that you're so emotionally invested in Jane/Rochester and they hold your attention so completely when they're onscreen together, that when anyone else is onscreen I sort of tend to switch off and wait for Jane/Rochester again.

I think you're probably right. The relationship between Jane and Rochester is so intense. Compare it with... ehm… let's say Jane and Bingley in Pride and Prejudice. Sure, when they are together they are cute and everything, but it feels like they are apart most of the time. She's mostly walking around thinking about him. Jane is right there with Rochester and listening to them interact with each other keeps me on the edge of my seat all the time because they say so many things that might be interpreted one way or another. When they interact with others it's more low-key. And no hidden meanings. And that just isn't as exciting. Oh, I'm just babbling, ignore everything I say! :-)

No, you're right. It is such a passionate relationship, comparable more with Cathy/Heathcliff than say, Jane/Bingley or even Lizzy/Mr Darcy. Even before they admit their feelings, there's such tension, such longing between the two of them. And then obviously there's the big reveal and everything after, which is so emotional and so passionate you really can't look away. The scenes with any other characters are almost downtime really, time to relax, because you can't physically remain at such a high pitch for the entire movie.
