Trailer for the fourth 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' movie, y'all.

I've heard so far from people in several corners saying things along the lines of: did we really need to make this movie? And while I'm not anti-sequel in principle or even in specific with this one, I'll give you that that is, you know, a point.

But then, you know what? IAN MCSHANE ( Read more... )

i thought you should know, squee, link, actors, pimpage, i think i actually need a disney tag, it's not bloody shakespeare, pirates, movie, omgyay!

You know, at this point the people who are making these movies as well as the audience knows good and damn well why they're shelling out $10 to see them, and it ain't for the awesome storytelling. I'll happily pay the price of admission time and again to see Captain Jack Sparrow, and since this movie is shaping up to be all about him (instead of Will and Elizabeth who I could take or leave most times and who in my opinion had a crummy wrap-up to their arch), I'm beyond pleased.

Ian Mcshane couldn't have been more perfectly cast. I'm actually super excited for this movie.

Yeah - I actually did enjoy the last two movies, but it doesn't change that the best part of the franchise has always been pirates! adventure! Jack! which is basically what it looks like this movie is all about.

Plus: creepy mermaids! And Barbossa!

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFF--

Alright, alright, I'M ON BOARD, DAMMIT.

I mean seriously, we get GIBBS, and GEOFFREY RUSH, and then ZOMBIES AND MERMAIDS, and a BADASS PIRATESS and of course Jack be Jack having Jack-ish adventures.*

The franchise is shaping up to be a proper pulp serial and I heartily approve. <3

* Though I do like Will and Elizabeth, their story has been told and they're not technically pirates. Leaving them be should clear up a lot of the overloading issues with the third movie, I think.

P.S. icon is not incidental. needs moar feisty femmeslash.

THERE REALLY AREN'T A LOT OF WAYS THEY COULD MESS THIS UP! I mean - it should be clear by now that we're not there for 'Citizen Kane' level writing, right?

I liked Will and Lizzy more than it seems a lot of people, but IAWTC. Their story arc is done and it's time to move on.

(The only way they could make it more perfect at this point is by bringing Norrington back from the dead.)

Citizen Kane, no, but Ted n' Terry are good for snappy dialogue, fun characters, and clever plots. They were rushed and overloaded in the two sequels and the story was more epic than four hours could quite handle; their flaw was being too ambitious, which is a much different thing from being bad. This movie looks a lot simpler so yeah, there's no way they can mess this up--not because it's failproof, but because they're awesome.

admittedly I may be a little shiny-eyed because I sort of adore the Zorro movies and come on, there's a REASON I like the PotC franchise so much. And, you know, now that I have some emotional distance from Norrington's arc, and I'm not up to my ears in headcanon, I should got back and watch At World's End again; I'll probably like it a lot more.(I very nearly said this in my first comment! Except I'm not sure where he would fit in this story-- either he'd have to be a pirate or be against the pirates, and being against the pirates didn't work out so well for him last time, eh. I'd hate for him to come back ( ... )

Nothing to say to your first paragraph except IAWTC. Just...yeah. I know I might sound dismissive of it at times, but I do think the trilogy is actually a very well-written story, if it got a little bogged down and overwhelmed at times.

As far as Norrington goes...I think, if they really wanted to bring him back, they could easily find a way to do it. I mean - they basically brought back Barbossa with "something, something, voodoo, do you really care how, IT'S BARBOSSA", and the people rejoiced, for lo, it was awesome. More realistically, though, he might not have much of a place in the story anymore (especially since it looks like the overall narrative is swinging strongly back in the PIRATES ARE YAY! direction, rather than the more multi-sided place we had to be in when Will and Lizzy were still around) and Ted & Terry probably think they're done with him. Le sigh ( ... )

Despite falling asleep in both of the sequels, the thought of Ian McShane as Blackbeard did make me perk up my ears. ;-)

I actually liked the sequels. I know a lot of people were unhappy with them though...but by trimming out the romantic entanglements and otherwise baggage of Will and Elizabeth, now that their part in the story is over, hopefully they can make room for more fun pirating.

Yeah, it wasn't so much I wasn't interested (I love Johnny at all times) but I picked the wrong time to watch the DVDs and lying on the couch wasn't a good idea... pity I did it twice with the second one. Never mind; I might get around to watching them both again some time (I don't get to the cinema nearly as much as I'd like, so I'm a home watcher months down the track generally).

Mermaids and zombies and Blackbeard, oh my! I'm excited and yeah, Ian McShane is awesome!

Also my card arrived today! *squee* thank you so much! I love the cherry blossom stickers. I used to do quite a bit of crafting (card making, scrapbooking when I printed out my digital photos) so maybe I should take it back up next year. You're right we don't talk much though I do read a lot more of your posts than I comment on - and I avoid spoilers! - but it's good to have you on my flist :D
