Bristol

Since this may be Last Internet Access Before Wilderness, I think I should write about Bristol.

In all my trips to England, I've never been to Bristol before.  I can't imagine why.  It has a cathedral and a museum and a waterfront and lots of history.  It also has the tavern (the Llandoger Trow) where Defoe met the seaman who inspired him to write ( Read more... )

Have you been to Tintern before? Even Wordsworth can't do it justice. And maybe you'll be lucky and not have crowds of bus tours to contend with.

Yes, I have--in nineteen-seventy-something. Through the magic of the intranets, I downloaded "Lines Written Above Tintern Abbey" last night and read it to Ek before we went to bed. Not a whole lot about Tintern per se, although lots about Nature and the Ineffable (also, sisters). But fine stuff for all that.

Given the weather and the date, I think we're safe from bus tours.

So. Very. Envious. Of the companioning aspect of the trip as well as where you are. It always sounds so nice when you two travel together.

It is fun. We've done enough of it so we're used to each other's rhythms. Plus, adventures.

Oh, lovely! I've only ever been through Bristol to get to Glastonbury, though I almost ended up at the university there. Did you know it's also where Coleridge met Wordsworth? :)

In my last life, I was partnered with a woman who loved the Lake Poets more than somewhat. Right out of college, we went to stay with a former professor, who was editing "The Ruined Cottage" (I think) and reading Dorothy's journals and generally hobnobbing with Johnathan Wordsworth, and then on to Tintern. So I did know that, once, although I'd forgotten until you reminded em. Thank you.

RW went to Bristol last winter on business and came home raving about it and wanting us to all go there on a big family holiday. Maybe sometime...

Oh, do. It's very pretty. Bath, Cheddar, and Wells are close by, too.

You absolutely must visit Barley Hall should you ever get to York, if you haven't already been there. Just great stuff.

Wood paneling is a joy, I think, and far too little used.

Also Plas Newydd at Llangollen. Them ladies sure liked them some Gothick carving, oh, yeah.

York will have to wait until next trip. Why, oh, why did we wait so long to come back to GB?
