Sydney 1

We've been in Sydney a day and a half, more or less.  It's perfect sucker spring weather--bright, warm in the sun, clear as a crystal bell, with a few fluffy white clouds on the horizon, just so you don't get bored with a perfect blue sky.  We're staying at a friend's flat in Surrey Hills, which represents the best of both worlds.  We get to stay ( Read more... )

Thank you. I've got a paid account, so this should work. I think part of my incompetence is simply jetlag and lack of time and patience. We're taking part of Saturday as a Day of Off. Maybe I'll fuss with it then.

There used to be quite a few little penguins (that's what they're called)(AKA fairy penguins, because they are so wee and cute, and blue penguins, because they are distinctly bluish) nesting in burrows off the beach around Manly, but I'm not sure it's a good season to see them. If it is, it's a dawn or dusk thing, as they return to the burrow after a fishing expedition.

There was a serious predation problem last year (appeared to be someone letting a dog harass them, possibly in response to the penguins' presence limiting development e.g. making building seafront pools impermissible)(which would YOU rather have?), so access and tours may be limited. However, if you get a chance, it's just charming to see them doing their natural thing in natural settings. They became big business near Melbourne and there's an official Penguin Parade viewing area etc., still worth doing if that is accessible to you.

Thank you for the info. Not sure we have time--we're headed for the Blue Mountains for 2 days this weekend, and I've got lots of Historical Activities lined up. But we'll look into this and make a note. I suspect this is not our last trip to Australia.
