Fandom seems to be under the impression that Hufflepuffs are softies, apparently for no better reason than because they have the word “puff” in their name. One is always reading in fanfic about Snape “making Hufflepuffs cry,” and therefore they might be considered cowards by Gryffindor standards. There’s no particular evidence for this in the books. Hard work and loyalty are not flashy, aggressive virtues like courage and ambition, but they’re not soft.

Fandom also appears to have the notion that Badgers are warm, nurturing, and kind-again apparently for no better reason than because the word “puff” implies softness and therefore the traditional “feminine” virtues. One should remember that Hufflepuff’s third virtue is justice, and traditionally the opposite of Justice is Mercy. Being fair is not the same thing as being kind. Likewise loyalty, by definition, involves the exclusion of those who are not part of the “in” group. A Hufflepuff who sees you as an outsider is not going to be friendly.
