War Stories...

or... What if they held a war and nobody came?

Potrero War had undeniably the best weather ever for a Calafian event over Labor Day weekend. It was a little bit warm on Thursday during merchant setup, and a bit windy that night and part of Saturday morning, but the temperature was relatively moderate, in the mid to high 80's and only occasionally ( Read more... )

Wow! The pavilion looks awesome. You did a great job with it! And the wares look great too! You have really turned this little hobby into something!

It's still just a hobby... my day-job pays the bills so that comes first. I hope it doesn't turn into much more than that, or the whole woodworking thing might lose its appeal.

There were a couple of weekends in the last month where I would have rather been doing something else, but Potrero was coming up fast and I had too much to finish.

The park ranger staring at my booth in disblief made it worthwhile, though. He asked "Where do you get something like that?" and I answered "Home Depot... some assembly required... and some drilling... and some router work... "

Your stuff is great looking.
Where is your on line store?
The tent set up is amazing and very pleasant to look at.

This is still just a weekend hobby for me... I sell when I feel like selling.

No online store yet... but it's not too far off.

In the meantime, my woodworking gallery is here:

Great pavillion! Good job!
We were planning on going to Conjecture, but both chronovius and one of the people we were going to attend with have jury duty either the week preceeding or immediately following the con. Bah.
I'm glad you had a great time at the war :)

Your pieces are just gorgeous. I love the stripey plates and bowls, especially.

Can your pieces be used to actually eat off of (and be washed over and over), or are they display-only?

It's all functional tableware. I wouldn't put it in the dishwasher or pour boiling liquid into them, but they should be able to handle any manner of cold or (non-burning) hot foods and liquid.

I started using an NSF certified finish several months ago as a final coat (if not all of the coats) that is guaranteed food safe after curing for 72 hours.

The heat issue is simply that the glue I use for laminating the layers of wood together is a plastic-base and might melt if it is too hot for too long. My solid pieces might actually hold up to that because there is no glue involved, but I wouldn't want to test it.

Thanks for the info!
I've always loved unusual/pretty tableware.
I hope it ALL sells for you at the next Con!! =D *crosses fingers*

Dunno if you knew this, but the Baronial Chirurgeon bought one of your wood and plexiglass (?) goblets. I think it was the first one you ever made. She really was pleased with it, and really liked how it looked.

Yes, she did. This one, in fact:

It's made of Cedar and a 2-part epoxy resin.
