What motivates Americans to act

Here's something inspired by this thread on the most recent LJ is down post on JournalFen. People there are counting their blessings that U.S. LJ users are so far not calling for SUP to suspend accounts of Russian users who are being targeted. Guess that means it was good for the status quo, and bad for the rest of us, that the NFL lockout was resolved.

Yes, but that's not all of it. It's also why the NFL lockout has been resolved, but the debt ceiling hasn't. Americans usually act to either get their entertainment back or, if they can't, get revenge on those who took it away. About the best bet would have been to link the NFL lockout to larger labor issues and the owners to plutocracy and transfer the anger to more useful targets that way. Most progressives wouldn't stoop to that, but I would. I have an excuse. I was a Republican for 22 years and some habits die hard.

haven't ever been a republican, but as someone who would like to see america wake up and take action against plutocracy, i would go there. nothing exemplifies the screwed up priorities of the nation like professional sports, in my book. (especiall considering the amount of corporate welfare they suck down yearly while the people most likely to watch sports bitch about poor people getting a break)
