My wife and I have been enjoying our subscription to HBO, which we got when we moved as part of our package from Comcast, although how long that will last is open to question, as we find Comcast's billing practices to be "surprising" to put it charitably. Charter had its own issues with reliability but its billing practices were very predictable ( Read more... )

Well, that io9 article convinced me that I REALLY don't want to see this show, just like I REALLY never need to read another Laurell K. Hamilton novel again in my life. I get enough WTF moments watching baseball.

Yeah, it's a sex-soaked supernatural soap opera. I can see why it might turn you off, but I think it's worth following. I'm really tempted to use my remaining week of Comcast On Demand watching the back episodes.

I'm unfamiliar with Laurell K. Hamilton's work. What about it turns you off?

Well...I started reading her Anita Blake novels on the recommendation of a fellow who knew I was into Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and indeed, the first half-dozen books were pretty good. Then the pr0n/horror ratio started moving more towards the pr0n end of the dial, and after reading Obsidian Butterfly I completely gave up on the series. The Merry Gentry novels were far worse; the first one had occasional plot getting in the way of the sex, and I didn't bother with the sequels. Not that I'm all that prudish, but I'd prefer less gratuitous sex and more plot in my fantasy novels.

I understand that to a certain extent LKH was using her novels as somewhat of a catharsis for her feelings resulting from a messy divorce, but some things you ought to write and then put straight in the burn barrel. Her fandom evidently thought otherwise, and that's okay; some clubs I'm just as happy not belonging to.

I found it disturbing, violent, and sexy. It would be hilarious only unintentionally for me, as I could see that it was way over the top in terms of pushing what vampires would be capable of to its logical extreme. That said, I didn't find it repellent, just extremely kinky.
