- Koi boys are the invention of beckyh2112 and I am using them with her permission. With that in mind, a few things about them:
- Koi boys are true hanyou -- the sons of a spirit known as the Winter Koi -- and spirits of running freshwater in the Fire Nation. They remain boys forever, never growing older than sixteen or seventeen physically. They also do not mature to an adult's mind -- but they've been teenagers for a very long time.
- Koi boys can and do mate with mortal women, usually teenage girls, and produce offspring. These children age and die as mortals do, but are marked like spirits -- their skin bears koi patterns, and they cannot drown.
- We are not going to be focusing on the koi boys, but their very existence is important.
- Avatar Saran is the first Air Avatar after Avatar Aang.
- Air Nomad culture has changed quite a bit from that which is displayed in Avatar: The Last Airbender as a result of the culture being all but wiped out at the beginning of Sozin's War.
- Airbenders are mostly born to Air Nomads, but even so long after their near-extermination, they can be born to any nation. Saran is the daughter of an Air Nomad and an airbender born on Kyoshi Island.
