Hell, why not?

I'm vegetarian, not vegan. But what irritates me more than meat-eaters than meat-eaters per se is the meat-eaters who go 'EWWWW! Eating dogs/cats/other cute animals/snails/creepy crawlies is, like, so wrong!!!!!!!!!!!'

Let's have some ethical consistency here, shall we - if you eat meat in any form, you're going to have a hard time explaining why Doris the Cow can be butchered into hamburger but Mittens the Cat cannot. I have far more respect for the meat-eaters who'll eat anything.

But, in order to be ethically consistent myself, I have to practice what I preach. So be it. If rat's milk is produced and is no more dangerous to your health than cow's milk, I will try it. And if I decide not to drink it regularly, it will be because cow's milk tastes better.

You go right ahead and milk a rat for 8 ounces of milk and tell me how it tastes.

Having had yak, llama, goat, and camel milk, and knowing that cats and dogs can't constantly lactate without suffering severe health consequences, I just posted it as a humorous piece, not a place for people to attempt to stand on their soapboxes. So enjoy that little extra respect that you didn't waste on me. kthxbye.

Then I'll point out I didn't assume anything about you. You posted a piece of news without commenting on it. How could I disrespect your views when I don't know what they are?

You did point out one flaw in my argument, which I was quite wrong to ignore. Yes, animal welfare is certainly a priority, and I was not aware of the consequences of constant lactation on cats, for example. So, thanks for that.

On the other hand, I wouldn't dismiss soapboxes so readily. Plenty of times I've made posts that have provoked completely unexpected responses- responses I might not have agreed with, but ones to take on board. Soapboxes can be wonderful things, if used properly.
