Summary: Kris Allen, Adam Lambert, and Katy Allen talk to Rolling Stone about their arrangement.
American Idol winner Kris Allen is finally finished with his album. "I miss my friends and family," he tells interviewers. "They're dealing with this really well, but it is stressful for them, and we all need some time to slow down."
But rather than fly home to his wife, she flies up to stay with him - where he's been living, in the apartment of Idol co-star and best friend Adam Lambert.
Kris and Adam hold hands as they wait for Katy's plane to come in. Adam glances over at Kris once or twice, sliding a hand up his back, pulling him close. "Are you nervous?" He asks, grinning at how Kris is bouncing a bit on the balls of his feet. The aptly nicknamed Pocket Idol shakes his head, biting his lip as he grins back. "Just...excited."
"Yeah." Adam says, mirroring his expression. "Me too." And he leans down, tilts up Kris' chin, and kisses him full on the mouth.
The plane finally arrives, and the two wait in matched anticipation as they watch the streams of people go by. Some of them cast glances at the pair - there are raised eyebrows, even some hushed whispers at how familiar Adam's hand is on Kris' neck, the way that Kris is curled inward at Adam - but then Katy arrives and our attention, as well as that of the two musicians, is stolen away.
Katy Allen is a pretty woman - as short as her husband and as wholeseome, girl-next-door as you can get. But today she's positively radiant, smiling and even breaking into joyful laughter as she sees who's waiting for her.
Kris envelops her in a hug as soon as he sees her, pulling her close and pressing kisses to her neck. She holds him tight a moment, and then releases him and looks up at Adam. There's no hesitation, no awkwardness, as he pulls her in, too, picking her up and spinning her around. "Hey." He says, as he puts her down, and she smiles, tender, leaning up and kissing him lightly. "Hey."
Later, Lambert lets us into his glitzy, modern apartment to tell us what's up.
Most American Idol fans - hell, most people who don't live under rocks - know that Adam, the most anticipated non-winner from Idol perhaps ever, is gay. And if they actually read the famous interview right here in Rolling Stone they know that Kris Allen fits right in with his fantasy material.
"He's the one guy I found attractive in the whole group on the show: nice, nonchalant, pretty and totally my type -- except that he has a wife." Lambert told us back then, startlingly honest. "I mean he's open-minded and liberal, but he's definitely 100% straight."
Or perhaps not.
Lambert says he gave up on Kris immediately once he knew he was taken. The three of them have taken to the couch, to talk to us. They curl close to one another - Katy is resting up against the arm of the couch, her feet across the other two's laps. Adam flings an arm around Kris, who curls into his shoulder, his thumbs making idle patterns on Katy's knees. Kris looks at Adam as he explains that he tried to move on, but it was hard - especially as the two of them kept staying on, week after week, and especially since Kris seemed to be making it as hard to let him go as possible.
Kris laughs at that, an open, honest sound. "Guilty." He says, amused, and shares a long look with Katy. They look at each other like people who don't need words, like, well, a married couple. And we're still wondering where Adam fits into this.
Katy nods to something Kris' eyes say, and speaks up for the first time. "Kris and I...we fell in love with each other in high school. We shared everything, we had all our "firsts" together, we gave each other our viriginities (here Kris blushes, and Adam raises an eyebrow at him. Kris half-heartedly punches him in the side, muttering, "shut up!" though the glam rocker hasn't said a word), we were, you know, the perfect couple. We knew we wanted to be married right out of high school - we wanted to show the world that we meant the world to each other, you know? That we truly loved each other as much as two people can."
During her heartfelt speech Katy has barely spared us a glance, looking, rather, at Adam, who's looking back with an expression that's entirely different than one you'd imagine from someone who's hearing this from the wife of the man he's in love with. He looks, actually, like he understands her completely, and he is, of all things, deeply touched.
Katy takes a deep breath. "But we also knew that love was infinite, and that we were young. Kris knew he wanted more out of life than being an unknown in a backwoods town in Arkansas - he wanted a career in music, to make enough of a name for himself that he could really live off it. And I - well, I'm perhaps not as vanilla as I look. I knew that there were so many things in the world that I wanted to experience, I definitely didn't want to limit myself."
And so the two of them got married - but they agreed on an open marriage, something rare indeed in "backwoods Arkansas". And though they didn't take advantage of it much when Kris was home, when Idol started they began to speculate.
"I remember, he called me, and I asked, "So, any pretty girls?" and he went, "Yeah, I guess, but ohmygod, Katy, this guy." And it surprised me because every time we'd started talking about it it had always been with another girl - I like boobs as much as he does - and I knew he was at least bi-curious but he just wouldn't shut up about him, you know? And so we started to put out feelers."
"Putting out feelers", as she called it, meant Kris flirting with Adam mercilessly. "At first I thought I was hallucinating." Adam admits, laughing. "I would, like, slap myself in the face every morning, like "Wake up, Lambert, you're confusing reality with porn again," but then...well, I started to see the signs that were pretty definite." He glances sidelong at Kris, who's looking at him with a fond half-smile. "Yeah." Kris breathes, and then looks at us, tinged just the slightest bit pink. "I think I gave myself away when I would stare at him, breathing hard, after he'd been performing, and when I found out he had freckles under all that mess?" He slid a hand across Adam's cheek, tracing the line of his makeup under his eye, obviously not minding the "mess" too much. "I was gone."
So how, exactly, did this go down? "They ambushed me!" Adam laughs. "One night, I came back to our room and Kris was sitting there, shirtless, I might add, with Katy on speakerphone. I thought she was going to chew me out!"
Katy grins at him. "Basically, we told him about our arrangement, and that if he wanted he was welcome to, uh, join us. We were hoping it would be a long term thing, but if he just wanted a quick fuck we were fine with that, too."
But Kris is frowning. "I wasn't." He said, after a minute. "I mean, yeah, at the time of the phone call maybe, but after Adam and I had, you know, it was too...I was terrified, honestly. I was afraid he might just be in this for the fun and it would be over when Idol was. And I wasn't okay with that." He looks at Adam. "I was too in love."
It's the first time either of them have said it, in the interview, and Adam's eyes are wet. We get the feeling that maybe this part wasn't planned, maybe Kris hadn't ever admitted how frightened he'd been. Adam takes Kris' hand, squeezing it and bringing it to his lips. It's touching and tender and Katy is looking at them both with a smile so full of love it's nearly blinding.
We don't ask much more - the air in the room is close, private, and hell, we may be paparazzi but we're not heartless. But we have to know - Adam is gay, and completely so, we heard it from his own lips. But Katy is clearly physically intimate with him (sexually or not). So what's the deal?
Adam doesn't let go of Kris' hand. "Katy is the most beautiful woman I've ever seen." He starts, and Katy blushes. "Inside and out, I mean it, she's utterly gorgeous. And she's...made me happier through her generosity than I ever dreamed of being. If I can please her half as much as she's pleased me, I'm glad to do so." Apparently running out of heartwarming, he smirks. "Besides, a mouth's a mouth, right? And an ass - "
"Adam!" Kris slaps a hand over his lover's mouth, blushing furiously, while Katy cracks up, laughing into Kris' neck. Adam's eyes are twinkling as he presses a kiss to Kris' palm, and Katy gets up to let us out. "Thank you for coming," She says, smiling. "We wanted to get this out there - we've been going a bit crazy, with Kris and Adam not being able to kiss in public and everything."
So there you have it, America - Kris Allen and Adam Lambert have boned. Not only that, but Katy's more than fine with it!
...But if you think that's the point of this article, you might want to read it again. Because they're showing us something much more important (and no less hot): that love is infinite, that infidelity is a matter of opinion, and that it truly is possible to live life with hearts fully open and curtains fully closed.
