You're absolutely correct. This is unfinished. It could've delved deeper, and there were even references to John losing his own mother. Ultimately I took those out.

I haven't said where John lives. Wouldn't it be ultimately a bit more sadder, if all the while he missed out on his daughter's life, that she lived with her mom and Michael in New York and John did as well?

John sees the similarities, not all of them because he doesn't like facing himself too much. And, when he sees Carroll he undoubtedly sees some of himself in her, the good, the bad, and the ugly. He also sees Annette as well. Which would lead for John to question his actions in the past in regards to the downfall of his relationship with his former and now passed away lover. If Carroll will be able to connect with anyone Julian appears to be the most likely option at the moment.

It is sad. No silver lining to it. Really. They've both lost someone important to them, and the pain of that won't be over come in one short/abrupt scene.

There could be a silver lining if he sorts himself and his relationship with his daughter out. Maybe.

Yes, it would be sadder if he was in New York the whole time. I'm not sure why I thought it was England, it must be because I was reading something before and it segued into it in my mind.
