Nightshift 36 - M11-M20

Oct 28, 2008 14:40

Nightshift tended to prove just as lackluster as Dinner. At least Tyche was there to give the Gambler company for the previous shift (and she received most of his steak. Enjoy it as he may, he just never felt right about eating it). Without a roommate, there was little to complain about, so he simply watched as the kitten tunneled herself under his ( Read more... )

It was difficult to get much sense out of Takaya's mumblings, but Frey gathered that something bad had happened with a visitor. Someone's nose had been broken? Clearly it wasn't Takaya's, so that meant probably the visitor? Oh dear. Hopefully Takaya hadn't hit whoever it was with his broken wrist.

"I have no intention of passing out at all. And I'm not going anywhere until I know Takaya is okay." Frey suspected that Takaya's welfare was not of much concern to this man--certainly the Sun Rune had never worried about what its rages were doing to Arshtat or her family.

That brought the smallest of smiles to his face. It wasn't a kind smile, or even amused it was just ... a flexing of muscles.

"Takaya is fine," he said. "Would you rather speak with him?" He tilted his head as though listening to something. "I don't think he would have much to say at the moment..." His screams and shouts of anger and grief were quite loud in his own head. What would they sound like outside?

"I think that there is no situation in which I would not prefer Takaya's presence to yours." Frey felt a tiny bit of a rush, that he was being so bold and rude with this man. He never could have gotten away with such behaviour at home--it would reflect poorly on the Royal Family. But here? He had some freedoms that were not available to him in Falena.

"I can think of many, but if you really want to speak with him...." Kagetora lifted a shoulder in a slight shrug.

"I'll release him when I so choose."

Frey straightened up, though it took considerable force of will to repress the dizziness that still plagued him, and gave not!Takaya a rather imperious stare. He was growing tired of being spoken to in that manner--he tolerated it from Zerase and the Star Dragon Sword because he had to, but even his patience was not infinite.

The smile grew a bit more. "I'm sorry, have I upset you?" His tone hadn't changed at all.

"Were you attempting to? But I'm afraid there were several people of your type in my army, I am well-used to dealing with this sort of behaviour." Frey was just running out of patience for it, especially since he didn't need this man in order to save his sister and his country--he only needed this man to return Takaya to control of their shared body, and judging by how frequently Takaya was the dominant personality, that was not as thoroughly under the stranger's control as he claimed.

The first spark of emotion crossed his eyes, though it wasn't anything ... pleasent. It was the look of a predator sizing up prey.

"No, I wasn't trying to upset you."

Frey was unfazed by not!Takaya's predatory gaze. He'd faced Zerase, before she decided that he was worthy of continuing to live, he'd faced Gizel and Marscal Godwin while they were under the influence of the Sun Rune. He'd faced assassins, monsters, and his own beloved aunt. He'd faced the Sun Rune itself, incarnate and angry. There was little left in this or any world that could cause Frey to flinch. "It saddens me that he must share a body with you."

"Share?" A soft, cold laugh escaped him. "You seem to misunderstand the relationship here."

Somehow, Frey felt that the Sun Rune would have responded in exactly this sort of way, had he ever been foolish enough to question it, had he even known at the time that the Rune was truly sentient, maybe even speaking for itself. "I don't care what you think the relationship is, frankly. Takaya has a good heart, and I would take him over you in an instant."

The smile never wavered. "Even when you realize that he doesn't exist?"

Kagetora was tired and Takaya had quieted down, so, shoving the teenager back to the front, he took his place behind the walls.

Takaya's body sagged and slumped over where he had been leaning against the wall. He seemed unconsious.

Since Takaya seemed to be sleeping, Frey took the risk of leaning in to try to resettle the boy's limbs in a more comfortable position. Smiling just slightly for a moment, Frey murmured, hoping that the other could still hear him, "I think it is you who fails to understand, stranger."

Takaya, despite being unconsious, still flinched slightly at the touches that settled him on the bed.

He stayed like that for a little while longer, then sat bolt upright, eyes flying open for a moment before he winced and covered his eyes with his hands.

"...fuck."

"Does your head still hurt? I apologise for that, I was a bit less than gracious with your other." Frey felt guilty for that little trick now, if it was going to be causing Takaya more pain.

"But please be careful of your wrist, I've healed it again but it's not up to full strength." Frey did not want to have to heal the same injury a third time, nor could he in his current state. He really did want to lie down, but Takaya was more important at the moment.
