Zack had been sitting alone in the cafe for some time now, wondering exactly where to look next for Sara. He hadn't heard from her at all in a day, and the more time passed, the more worried he grew. This didn't seem... right. Didn't feel like all the other disappearances. It was almost as if she was in trouble or something, and he was powerless to help her.
Slumping against the table, the SOLDIER ran one gloved hand through his unruly hair in his concern. Some help these stupid Jenova cells were. With all their 'greatness' and 'amazingness', he should've already been able to find her. But no, all he had was headaches and sickness.
He blinked a bit. It didn't seem like him to think this negative. But he just couldn't help it...
Hearing someone walk in suddenly, mako-blue eyes glanced up... then widened in surprise. So Aeris was still here! Thank Shiva...
Trying to pick himself up and regaining his composure, the dark-haired man forced a shaky smile. "Long time no see, Aeris. How're you?"
"Zack!" Aeris didn't need to hesitate now as she undid her scarf, pulling the door closed behind her, just in case. If someone or something came past, they'd be able to see it beforehand through the glass. Scarf in hand, she sat down at his table and draped it across a chair next to them. " 'Long time' ... "
She rested both still-gloved hands on the table, feeling a twinge in her stomach at his forced smile. It would be an understatement to say that he wasn't looking good. His expression reminded her of a person who's just lost someone very close to them. Come to think of it, she hadn't heard from any of his friends lately, either. ... That combination wasn't helping the situation here much.
"I'm allright," she answered after a moment. "I'm ... staying with Tifa. It's mostly quiet there, but I miss having everyone around." She looked down at her hands, then up at him again, fingers knotting together slowly. " ... I haven't seen you in awhile. Is everything okay?"
"Oh... good." He replied softly, allowing the relief to seep into his tone. "As long as you're not poofing away, too..." He laughed, although it was hesitant.
Zack was silent for nearly a minute, mako-blue gaze fixed upon the table in deep thought. Resting his chin upon the hardwood and spreading his arms out in front of him, the SOLDIER shook his head sadly.
"Do you remember... back when we were kids? How I wanted to save Angeal and wound up failing?" He bit his lip. "...it's happening again."
Aeris peeled both gloves off and set them aside, watching as he slumped over the table. The Zack she remembered was always so cheerful and friendly that his attitude was practically contagious. But now it seemed that in the space of just a few moments, he'd lost all of that.
Two and two were easy to put together here, though one of the things she hadn't known for sure - people apparently could leave this city, and someone he'd known had left. She was silent for awhile, looking down into his dark hair.
"I remember," she said softly, thinking back to the time he'd protected her in the church. And none of that had ended well. She leaned in a little. " ... Who was it?"
