"You lived in London?"

Fred stepped out from the alley he had wandered into during today's stroll. He hadn't expected to see anyone else, but there, in the middle of the street, stood a girl. She was alone, apparently talking to herself. Fred liked her already.
He paused before he spoke again, trying to tell if she was upset with him for jumping in.

"Ah, forgive me for eavesdropping. But I'm curious, what was it like?"

The girl seemed less afraid than most were at this point, but maybe she was just better at hiding it.

"And this is where you start taking careful steps backwards, and remember you've got to get going, yes? You may run away, honestly I'm quite used to it." He said with a small, somewhat forced smile. People's reactions to him were always the same; it was becoming rather trite.

"And why would I do that? It would be very rude and inconsiderate." His statement didn't surprise her though. Any other person would probably be doing that at the moment. But, she really wasn't 'any other person'.

So maybe this would be different. Maybe she wouldn't assume asylum equals violent psychopath. Was that possible?

"Ah, but most people stop caring about being polite when they believe their life is in danger. Even if that fear is irrational..."

"Well, is my life in danger? Answer me that?" She motioned with her hands as she talked. She wasn't convinced her life was in danger, at least not at the moment. And even if it was, she would be able to defend herself.

Besides, who was crazier than V?

"Now dear, even if I wished to harm you, what damage could I do?" He held up a limp, twig-like arm to demonstrate. It amused him how frightened people could be of him, despite how frail he looked.

"But I assure you, I've never hurt anyone, nor do I have the intention to."

"Well then, as I said, I'm not afraid of you." She smiled again, showing him that she was being completely honest.

"Anyway, I'm thinking of heading back to Madison Square, I've been gone a bit longer than I'd planned."

Fred smiled as she did. "That makes you far different than everyone else I've come across. And for that, it was a great pleasure to meet you, Miss Evey."

And with a small wave from his spidery fingers, he was off into the shadows of the alley he had came from.
