As of episode 17, I don't think it has improved. To me, this is the worst Stargate series. They've tried mimicking BSG, but these writers can't pull it off, they don't have the "imagination". People also claimed this series would be more character driven, but there's no chemistry -- several months in and they still act like strangers to each other -- the whole flashback thing just seems completely forced. In the end the show just seems like a group of hermits under one roof reminiscing about their lives.
Hum, I don't think its useful to compare to other Stargate series. The styles are very different, you might favor one style versus the other. For instance I said I was enjoying SG:U more than SG: Atlantis, but I wouldn't say that SG:U is better than SG: Atlantis.
Anyways, as for the series itself... Well, like I said previously I think that several fundamental aspects of the story were not good, as well as lots of particular details in most episodes. So, I also think that the series will not have much of a future... although the reasons why might be different from yours, I don't think "the show just seems like a group of hermits under one roof" is necessarily bad.

Maybe I'll comment again after I see ep 17 :)
