I think the key thing is an old survival thought: People lose their way. Some try to stay with the old map they have, hoping it will lead them out. Some deny the map, and insist that everything is fine. These people usually die.
The ones who survive realize that it's time to make a new map based on what they see around them. They throw away the old map that no longer works, and live in the here and now that they find themselves. These people usually live.
The protagonists.... refused to give up their map. Like the guy in idiocracy who chanted "Carl's JR! CARL'S JR!" like it was some magic totem against evil.
