When a customer is trying to get helped, they always want to hope for the best; I've had lots of people assume I worked for a store I was in over the years.
My dad said that used to happen to him a lot. He was a territory sales rep so he had some flexibility in his daily schedule. If he needed to do some shopping for himself or for a gift for birthdays or Christmas he'd drop by a department store during the day between customer visits. Back then staff didn't wear polo shirts, and as a middle aged man in a white shirt and tie he was often mistaken by fellow shoppers for a store manager. Nothing crazy ever happened; he'd just tell people, "Sorry, I don't work here."
Lols! That's happened to me! Last winter I was at Target and made the mistake of wearing a red sweater with khaki pants (what their associates wear). My daughter was with me and we were shopping for jeans for her. She ran off to use the bathroom. My older sister was in the hospital and I was in the middle of a phone conversation with my mom about her. An old lady walked up to me and stood there, but I ignored her because I was listening to my mom. She snapped, "EXCUSE ME!" and I looked at her and she snarled, "GET OFF YOUR PHONE RIGHT NOW! I NEED ASSISTANCE!" I blinked at her and said, "Ma'am, I don't work here
