It is part of a long series of Tolkien based fanfic that started out as an idea for a short cross-over story (take a character from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and drop her into Middle Earth) about 12 years ago!
We watched it with our daughter - it was shown here a year or more after it began in the US and she was about 10.
The Returnverse stories really began because I had read some Tolkien fanfic and thought far too many of them were boringly similar; 'modern day girl finds herself in Middle Earth, becomes one of The Fellowship, saves everyone from disaster, is Legolas one-true-love, he has to give up his immortality to marry her.'
There were so many things wrong with them, apart from them being boring. Not least of which was that Tolkien's elves simply cannot give up their immortality.
So I set myself the challenge of writing a fic that would 1. Have a valid reason for someone appearing in Middle Earth from outside. 2. Not rewrite the story of Lord of the Rings with a 'tenth walker'. 3. Certainly not involve romance with Legolas.
And I decided that a particular non-central character from Buffy would work well to fit all three.
I had no idea, in 2008, quite what I had started!!
