First harvest!

This is my first harvest. Any self respecting hobbit would tell you in is not even sufficient for first breakfast, but considering there is only one blackcurrant bush, tucked in between two other things, I reckon it's pretty good.

That looks like a wonderful harvest! I love homemade jams.

I was pleased with the amount - and the jam, too!

The jam, on toast, was a very good breakfast this morning. (I made it yesterday.)

OH YUM!

Blackcurrant and raspberry combined sounds SO GOOD to me. Blackcurrant is my favourite kind of jam and raspberry a close second. But we don't find blackcurrant anything here very often so when I do I buy all the jars I can find. Lately, Robertson's has been available.

My mother used to spend days "putting up fruit" as the called it back then. What a process!

It is a really nice combination - mostly blackcurrants so nicely tart.

I think most of the jam I remember Mum and Granny making was blackberry. We used to go blackberrying over a couple of weekends and then the big preserving pan would come out. All I remember doing with the fruit is making sure there were no stalks, leaves, or bugs in them, so not a lot of prep but, when I think of it, a big preserving pan with maybe 10lb each of fruit and sugar probably took a long time to get up to the right temperature on a single gas ring of the cooker!

Black currants are fantastic! I wish we had them over here. I just bought some red ones because they were on sale, but the black ones are magnitudes better.

You rarely see them in the shops here - so having a bush is really neat!

It is! Although if I'd waited another day or two there are more raspberries, I just noticed them this afternoon.
