I'd modify one of the spherical Christmas ornament patterns by coing back-loop crochet for the indentations.

I was planning on making that hat for my boyfriend's BIL, but have issues working from the brim up on a hat. I'm trying to construct a masculine-looking hat from the top down, and everything I try is so lacy and adorable that I know he wouldn't wear it :)

I made these club covers for my dad and he really liked them. The pattern made me think they weren't coming out right but then something magic happened and voila, they were club covers. So if they don't seem right, just keep going with the pattern and they will work.
