Today, I accomplished all of the following:
  • pulled down the two ginormous clunky fluorescent light fixtures from our kitchen ceiling that have probably been up there since the original construction of the house thirty-five years ago (made harder than it sounds by the fact that they were adhered to the ceiling, as well as bolted in six places)

If you were installing new fixtures anyway, why use self ballasted compact florescent? CFs with offboard ballasts are quite a bit cheaper, as well as longer lasting and (marginally) more efficient, though no CF is going to win any efficiency awards.

What I'd *really* like to do is find some freakin' bulbs that will fit in the lights that we already bought, and that I already installed one of.
