She crushes a small bird, one of those sparrows or some such thing, beneath her new shoes to hear it shriek. Birds so seldom scream in pain. Her tummy feels warm. Today is her tenth birthday.

Intriguing...

One question. If she loved death and suffering so much, would she herself call them evil? It seems like she'd argue the opposite of something she believed in so passionately.

I think it's just a word. But really this is an old passage of a larger story which has probably undergone some changes.

I should dig up some more of it.

I never liked that last line. But she's using the words of those around here - I think. Good question, at any rate. I should re-read it with that in mind (and as look up those changes).
