Top Ten Most Influential Games ever.

Dec 14, 2008 20:50

This is a list that appeared in an Australian newspaper recently.
I think this list is headed wrong. It should be called, the top ten most memorable games.

There is no doubt these games had an impact on the gaming environment. I would argue about the ordering of them in the context of what the heading implies though.

My list. )

top ten, video games, list

Good post, I enjoyed reading it. Perhaps Mario 64 should also be on the list somewhere...

Mario 64 is a sequel/evolved form of Super Mario Brothers. Therefore it is a product of the influence of the original Super Mario Brothers. It's an amazing game though.

I composed a reply and am upset that it has been lost.

Sonic is not as influential as those above games.

Zelda was close, because of it's revolutionary context controls and massive sales and extraordinary gameplay.

Super Mario 64, well, it was difficult to not put in, I made an executive decision based on the fact that it is a later game in a franchise that has already been mentioned. While it is a great game and highly influential, it is still an evolution of Super Mario Brothers and therefore a symptom of the influence of the original game.

Goldeneye was an amazing game, it may be the best first person shooter of all time, it hasn't really been influential enough to make my list though.

I pretty much agree with your list, I would have perhaps added Sim City or The Sims to the list as they've been pretty influential over the years.

I also pretty much agree with the list you linked to, except I would have put Dune II in the actual list since that did have an impact on a lot of later games.

Actually, in hind sight, Dune 2 is probably unjustly excluded.
The numbers game has robbed it.

The Sim games were quite close, if it wasn't for the failure of The Sims Online, it would have a certainty.

Yeah, I'd agree with that list. Even though it's not groundbreaking, my fav is Bioshock. KTOR was kind of groundbreaking or at least the first one I've seen where you solve math problems and you could choose the race and gender of your character.
