How to make a mermaid tail - The Monofin

Jul 13, 2009 20:42

I'm currently working at my mermaid tail. And there is so much to write and to explain, that one entry would be too big. So I'm preparing many small parts. A step-by-step-explanation so to speak. And I'm starting with the fluke.

Well, I prefer a monofin. A monofin makes things a lot easier and keep your legs in the correct position. It's also easier to cover your legs and fluke with your fabric. Monofins are available in many sizes and shapes (from $40 up to $300 !!!) I can't tell you what's the best, because it's a matter of taste. There are round monofins, like for a manatee, and special monofins for women and men. Here are a few examples:

The most important thing for me was the size. I wanted a wide and stable monofin. Because I belong to the "Strong-Tribe". "Strong" not from "strength". "Strong" from "well-proportioned"! Especially around the hip! *LOL* It always looks ridiculous to me, when I see a picture of a mermaid with a tiny fluke! The tail (including the fluke) is the pride of a mermaid (next to hair and breasts... *blush*). So a mermaid must have a decent fluke! End of story! Basta!

I was looking around online-dive-shops and chose the biggest monofin I could find. Here it is:

brand "Mat Mas" made in Italy
measurement: 62 x 64 cm; hardness grade: 5
Ordered it HERE.
My whole pride!

I drew the shape of a fluke on the monofin with a piece of chalk and brought it to my dad to cut it along the line. It was impossible for me to do that, because the material is no hard gummi. It’s more a stable plastic and not possible to cut with a normal cutter. But my dad made it and here’s the result:

That’s it! Your monofin is ready!
