Also: Have you checked out Serge Gainsbourg yet? The best album is Du Jazz Dans le Ravin - a definite all-time favorite (it's what we play for christmas, instead of the tired old christmas tunes). Here's a sample:

I was thinking about Gotan as well. Maybe The Martini Kings or Morphine or Claude Challe's Buddha Bar stuff.
There's a lot of really perky lounge music like Esquivel, but that's a very brightly-lit lounge full of hipsters.
Some of Alison Goldfrapp's stuff might work, as well.
