Damned: M-U Aftereffects

Jan 01, 2001 00:00

On Night 57, Byrne underwent one of the Institute's lovely Character Mess-Up Sessions, or M-U. ( The thread is here if you'd like to read it.) As with most M-Us, there are lasting side-effects.

What he now has is a syndrome I affectionately call “The Snitter Syndrome.”

If you’ve ever read (or watched the film adaptation of) The Plague Dogs, you will know this 'syndrome' pretty well because the character Snitter displays similar, but worse, symptoms. If not (and I expect most haven’t, it’s a pretty obscure book), then allow me to explain. Byrne received an injection that gave him a crazy hallucination during his M-U; that same injection, however, is still in his body and has now started to screw with his brain. 80% of the time he is fine, but the other 20% of the time…he’s kind of loopy. Crazy. Delusional. Yeah.

20% of the time, the serum causes Byrne’s conscious and subconscious to no longer have a defining line between them. He can slip back and forth between 'sane' and 'insane' quite easily and without any warning. In his ‘loopy’ state, he may say random things, forget where he is, see someone when there’s no one there, perceive people as someone (or something) else, etc. He’s like a sleepwalker traversing through his own complicated feelings and memories. The best part? He isn’t aware that it’s happening. It’s exactly like he’s dreaming: everything makes sense to him when it’s actually happening, and it isn’t until he ‘wakes up’ that he realizes it wasn’t real. Trust me, he won’t be happy about it when he comes out of the hallucination. Not in the slightest.

As already stated, the effects only occur about 20% of the time. Hallucinations typically last one to two posts (unless the attack is severe, which is very rare) and he happens to get them at night more often than in the day. Crazy nighttime rules, what can I say. The severe, longer than two posts hallucinations only happen at night, as well, and the chances of one happening are one in 10 nightshifts, maybe even less. So don’t worry about him going super crazy too often. Also, as disclaimer, the hallucinations do not grant him any knowledge about a specific person, place, or event. They are only figments of his imagination and generally relate to his M-U, the Yatagarasu, or his life back at home in some way. Anything he may assume is only his assumption and should not be taken seriously.

Lastly, when he slips into his M-U effects, I will always make sure to mark a post as such with [m-u effects] in the subject line. Just so you're not like WAIT WTF IS WITH THE PURPLE ELEPHANT when he starts being loopy - because half the time I will not make an obvious mention in his post that he is hallucinating. After all, it SEEMS real to him!

That is about everything to explain, methinks. Damned players, if you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment here/PM me and I’ll do my best to answer them. :D
