I use mostly blackcurrants just because most of the year Russia is out of season for fresh berries. Frozen blackcurrants are easily available in very good quality while frozen blueberries (in our supermarkets) are not so good.

No, they do not taste of baking powder. All of it reacts and disappears during the baking. I specifically tested the recipe on my friend, who is very sensitive to soapiness in pastry and she approved :)
