open you image up and crop it down.
now duplicate your first layer (ctrl+j) and set the 2nd layer to screen @ 70%
layer > new adjustment layer > exposure:
+0.02, -0.0333, 1.10
layer > new adjustment layer > color balance:
shadows: 10, 0, -4
midtones: 13, -7, -14
highlights: 0, 0, -4
make sure preserve luminosity is check marked. hit okay.
layer > new adjustment layer > levels:
15, 1.29, 240
layer > new adjustment layer > invert:
set to multiply @ 25%
layer > new adjustment layer > exposure:
+0.18, -0.0450, 0.92
now this is optional, but i did it because i've always seem to have to have a bit of
blue in my pieces.
layer > new adjustment layer > photo filter:
pick Coloring Filter (80) from the drop down menu
set density to: 13%
make sure preserve luminosity is check marked.
BAM YOUR DONE! see easy.

other icons made using this coloring with minor tweaks. (turning a layer or two off)
it's all about experimenting. i can't stress this enough. experiment enough and pretty soon you'll look at other peoples icons and say: i know how they did that coloring, etc'.
