For:
mini_nanowrimo “I proposed to her!” Jensen says, as soon as Jared opens the door, his face flushed with excitement.
And of course she said yes, Jared thinks, how could she not. It’s Jensen.
Those four words cut Jared’s heart in a way he didn’t think was possible. Because he was too much of a coward to actually talk to Jensen about his feelings, to actually tell the guy that he was in freaking love with him, and he lost him before he even had the chance to have him.
The worst part about all of it is that Jared actually loves Danneel. She’s smoking hot, hilarious, sarcastic, pretty much the perfect female counterpart to Jensen. They look gorgeous together and Jared can’t help but think how their kids are going to be impossibly beautiful. So yeah, he’s happy for them because he knows, logically, that they love each other.
The other part of it is that Jared actually had a chance. He saw the glances Jensen would cut his way when he didn’t think Jared noticed. He saw the hope shining in his eyes when Jensen moved in, and the regret in them when he moved out. He knew that Jensen had feelings for him. Or, at least, he thought he did. But it was too late to know now. It was too freaking late.
His heart is fallow from the hurt and pain, but he smiles at Jensen, he can’t help it. The corner of Jensen’s eyes crinkle when he’s genuinely happy, his eyes shine brightly, and his lips are stretched into the widest smile Jared’s seen in awhile. He can’t do anything but smile at Jensen, never could do anything but. He swallows the regret and ache and hugs him.
“Congratulations man! I’m happy for you,” Jared says, actually meaning it. Because that’s all he really wants for Jensen, to be happy.
He could tell Jensen right now how he really feels. But that wouldn’t accomplish anything. He doesn’t want to make Jensen choose, he doesn’t want to put him in that position, and he doesn’t want Danneel to get hurt. He loves them both too much for that.
“I’m gonna be the best man right?” Jared jokes. He knows it’s not even a valid question. Who else would it be? It’s going to hurt like hell standing up there and watching the love of his life get married to someone else, but it’s partly his own damn fault. Jared just has to suck it up and be happy that Jensen’s happy.
“Like there was any doubt of that! Thanks, Jay,” Jensen says, eyes liquid gold and voice soft. Jared has to look away before he does something stupid. Like kiss Jensen senseless.
“’Course man,” Jared says, voice rough.
He lets Jensen walk away, to go call his family now. Because of course Jensen told him first, before he told anyone else. Jared can’t help but think this is the first walk away of the many in the future.
A/N: Title from Steve Carlson’s song. ALSO. This doesn't reflect my feelings on the situation at all!
