I think it's more about paying the bills and the fact The Golden Compass is supposed to have been so expensive that it broke New Line. That probably tarnished his reputation a bit. A money making movie should wipe away some of that tarnish. However, ff Summit thinks they're going to be able to achieve the look of TGC (cost $180 million which is more than what Twilight has grossed so far) on a third of the budget, they're going to learn real fast they're wrong.
