Before I ever read this (but I'm sure it's epic) I want to toss this bit of grist into the mill since I don't know who else might. The first time I encountered the word 'hassun' it was in the phrase 'hassun no nobegane' in which its meaning is 'eight sun' (one sun = about an inch) . The phrase refers to an esoteric (bordering on paranormal) sword technique in which the master swordsman, by means of deep meditation and losing himself in his practice, can cause the impact of his sword to extend further than the length of the blade - that is, he extends his will through and past the point of the sword to cut things too far away for him to physically strike (making the sword "eight inches longer" as it were). This struck me as a perfect metaphor for causing someone else to do what you want or need done - to extend your influence into a space in which you yourself are not. I hope to heck this turns out to be relevant, cos it's just so neat.

And now I go read. Thank you, thank you!

I think the Hannibal costume team went and stole that suit from Don Cherry's closet because there is nowhere else it could have come from.

That checkered suit is actually Bryan Fuller's. Which makes me unendingly happy.

Yeah, Fuller's got some inches and a bit of weight on Mads.

My favorite moment in this whole episode: the lawyer's deadpan delivery of "I think I opened your mail" when A FRICKING EAR DROPS ONTO THE TABLE HOLY SHIT!

Somehow his reading of "and it is adorable" narrowly edged that out for me. Heh.

I love the little shoulder-shrug he does when he said that.

I like to imagine that someone in the writer's room interjected that half-jokingly during a planning session or table read, and they decided it was just too true not to let it pass without comment.

Honestly, the main reason I thought it was Hannibal the first time I watched it was the Murder Tie. I see that tie and I automatically assume he's doing, done or about to do something heinous to someone (I mean, moreso than usual).... they purposefully used the costuming to misdirect us...this is like that moment in Jaws when the shark appears without the music.

YES! He was wearing the murder tie, but there was no murder!

Totally absurd theory: He has to put the Murder Tie into rotation because so many of his clothes are still in the forensics lab, and he somehow contrived to not have the Murder Tie picked up with the rest of the stuff they're examining for evidence because it has a chance of incriminating him.

Either that, or the murder tie is self aware and made itself scarce when they were picking up his clothes. Remember that behind the scenes shot of Hannibal's wardrobe, and it's hanging by itself because none of the other ties will go near it.

Regarding the Dolarhyde theory: what I think may be happening is Fuller laying the trackwork for parallels in the Red Dragon season, but not necessarily using Dolarhyde/anyone directly linked to Dolarhyde. There's already been a lot of parallels in the first few episodes between Seasons 1 and 2, and they seem to be continuing-- episode 4 of each season deals with Bella Crawford (if we disregard Ouef), and, judging by the preview for next episode, episode 5 of each season involves Eddie Izzard.

So, what I'm thinking is: Will's admirer is going to be a parallel to Tobias being Hannibal's admirer in Season 1. Judging by the preview, Will seems to be sending him after Hannibal, similar to how Hannibal sent Will after Tobias.

But if the paralleled seasons continue in the future, I can see the Hannibal/Dolarhyde relationship being a mirror of Will and his admirer. And Hannibal ultimately sending Dolarhyde after Will would be the ultimate comeuppance -- "Hey, remember how you sent a serial killer after me while you were in jail? Let's ( ... )

Just wanted to say that I like your idea of parallels, which seems to be Fuller's bread and butter.

Thanks! :D And yeah, Fuller seems to have his entire seven season arc planned out pretty well, with lots of connections between the past, present, and canon future. I wouldn't be surprised if this was one of them.

I like where you are predicting that this will go.
