Hannibal 1x06: "Entrée"

May 04, 2013 12:59

OH MY SHIT

YOU GUYS

WHAT JUST HAPPENED

This episode is a thing of beauty and delight once you realize what they're doing. But since I'm largely staying away from spoilers, I didn't know, and thus I spent much of it shouting at the TV in a fit of fangirl pique. Bear with me, then.

Disturbing content and Eddie Izzard, as promised )

hannibal, tv, om nom nom, well that happened, recaps

but we haven't seen lecter kill anyone yet. i know it looks like we did, but if he'd killed her right there, how would he have gotten the tape to play for jack?

he just choked her out.

so either there are more flashbacks to come where he manages to get that tape, or she's still alive somehow. maybe incapacitated and unable to get help (like a mason verger precursor) and he's been breaking down her mind for two years. sure easier to get her to jack's house that way.

Well, I say "strangled," but I didn't mean "to death." You can choke someone unconscious in--what is it, thirty seconds? It takes a number of minutes to actually kill them. I want to say two minutes, I can't remember. I'm assuming he incapacitated her that way and hauled her off to kill her later, make the recording, etc. But that's also why I mentioned "dire possibilities of the last two years," because that arm looked kind of fresh. (I guess he could have frozen her body. Oh my God, I have to stop thinking about this.) I think at this point she's probably dead (I guess he could have just cut off her arm, who knows at this point). But I was wondering how that recording was made. Not even so much how he made it, but why she seemed to think she was calling Crawford for help when clearly that isn't what was actually happening.

Five minutes of an air choke to have serious brain damage if you get revived after the asphyxiation. And you can strangle (choke: air, strangle: bloodflow) someone to unconsciousness in about seven seconds if you're really good about it, and death is really soon after you create the hypoxic state in the brain.

I bet he would have a walk-in freezer with limbs if he could get away with it.

MAYBE YOU SHOULD BE IN A LECTURE HALL BONING UP ON HYPOXIC STATE INDUCTION TECHNIQUES.

Memories of season one 'Dexter' definitely had me yelling at the screen, "THAT ARM IS FRESH - SHE'S STILL ALIVE."

Wait, I'm an idiot. I did say "the first time we see him kill someone" after that, didn't I? Which, you're right, is logically not what happened. I think I was making some conflation between "attacking her now because he's killing her later," because I don't quite know how else to say, well, THAT'S a new thing.

in your defense, i can only expect your mental state was a little impaired by flail. god knows mine was, because i too was squealing "SOCK FEEEEET" into my hands.

ANYWAY.. i'm like 90% sure she's dead, but that outlying possibility is so horrific that i can't discount it entirely. i am confident that bryan fuller would do that to us if he thought it would be believable enough to be scary.

also, i loved all their thievery from / dicking around with canon in this episode, because of this right here:

We now have no idea how Will's going to find out, or how Lecter's going to get caught, or what's going to happen when he is. Now, ALL BETS ARE FUCKING OFF. it really is a gamechanger, and that is EXACTLY how you play an audience when you're retelling an established story. hey audience! things will be different this time! TOTALLY DIFFERENT. are we all on board? yes? good. now all the suspense (e.g. season cliffhanger!) will be genuine because they can do all kinds of crazy shit that we will never see coming because the books are ( ... )

I love that this is the detail we got stuck on. When I saw socks I was like, okay, this girl is officially screwed. I was WAITING FOR IT; I just never thought it would happen this soon.

It's also a relief, in a way--I say this about a lot of things, but I would rather them (anyone) do their own thing with whatever material in a thoughtful, original way than just a pale imitation. And this episode demonstrates why.

i loved the low angle shot, too. it was like watching a snake whip toward its prey over the ground. SO SCARY.

i'm so reluctant usually to trust creators of shows. i have been let down many times. but this... dammit fuller. if you bring lee pace onto this show i may explode.
