There are some good Hanukkah songs! I am going to post a couple that would have been perfectly suitable for this show on my advent calendar this year.
I have been annoyed about the casual Judaism on this show since the beginning, but there was so much to be offended by this year, and the lack of any acknowledgement of what's a pretty big part of both Puck and Rachel's identity is a big one. I was really hoping to find out if Shelby celebrates, to be honest. Not that I want to see her being gross about Puck any more, but I want to know if his kid's being raised Jewish.
I think I'm jaded due to years and years of "Oh Hannukah Oh Hannukah" and "Dreydl Dreydl Dreydl"?
And yeah! I think I've gotten used to the fact that they just ignore it but then it comes to this type of episode and I want to scream. I mean, it doesn't take much effort to show that they don't celebrate the freaking holiday. I mean they are trying to make Rachel seem like she wants a lot of gifts, HELLO? Just say "I'm going to need a gift for each night." It's easy.
I would have been curious about Beth as well. I mean, have they stated that Shelby's Jewish or did I just assume because Idina is Jewish? Beth is not technically Jewish because we go off of maternal line and Quinn isn't but if Shelby is I'm sure there are concessions made? I don't know.
I know less about season three canon than anyone, but as far as I know they haven't stated explicitly that Shelby's Jewish. Unless they said it when Rachel was telling Jesse about her birth mom; I think it might have been said then, but I'm too lazy to go back to season one canon.
I have some Peter, Paul and Mary songs to post this Hanukkah. They could have let Rachel sing "Light One Candle" and it would have had the same effect as "River", if they were decent writers. ALAS.
You're not annoying, you're absolutely right. It wouldn't even take much to make it part of the dialogue; it just feels like the writers don't remember that they have Jewish characters.
I suppose I'm not surprised, seeing as they manage to screw everything else up these days.
That's what annoys me the most I think, they only remember it when it can be used as a joke (IE the kosher joke at the end.) I mean, they get that she's Jewish but they just don't CARE about the fact.
They are frustrating in general... Even things I LIKE I end up hating. *sigh*
Is it just me or are things getting worse for religious diversity out there? I was trying to buy a generic but pretty "Happy Holidays" card to send to my friend and her wife (Christian and Pagan, in this case) and I had to go to multiple stores to find something. >_<
and the rant isn't annoying--if they have Jewish characters, they need to show, not tell. ESPECIALLY on TV, where it is easy to show.
Oh, don't even get me started. Yeah. Trying to find something that doesn't say "MERRY CHRISTMAS" or even just having everything in green and red which basically says Christmas without using the words... it's IMPOSSIBLE. Crazy and annoying and I can't even imagine if I didn't celebrate even Hannukah because it would be even worse.
It really isn't that hard to show it, I don't get why they feel like they can't do it? Or maybe they just don't want to? I don't know.
It's not just you being "that annoying Jewish girl" because I got really annoyed with it too. I think I annoyed my sister by yelling "YOU DON'T CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS. YOU ARE JEWISH!" at the tv most of the episode. Glee's characterization this season has been spectacularly bad. :((

Funnily, Timm who has HATED this season actually liked the episode? I was kind of "eh" when I wasn't full of annoyance.
