Sorry
Tear streaks stained Olivia’s cheeks as she slept against Peter’s chest. It had been a long night, they had nearly lost Peter three times. Around two in the morning Walternate and Walter and found a possible cure that could save Peter yet again from the illness that plagued him many years ago, and took the like of the real Peter Bishop. She snuggled deeper into his chest started to wake. She didn’t want to move from that spot. She took comfort in being able to hear his heart beating and his breathing and she knew he was still with her.
His Fault
Peter stared at Olivia through the window of her hospital room. Everything that happened to her was his fault. If he hadn’t left, she wouldn’t have went looking for him; crossed universe to save his life. If she hadn’t been there she would never have been caught, and if would never have been caught her memory would never have been erased and she wouldn’t have had to fight to find her way home.
He hated himself for making her go through that. He hated seeing that look in her eyes when she realized nobody knew the other Olivia wasn’t her. He hated how she ran from him when he told her he slept with the other Olivia.
It was his entire fault. It was his fault she ran out into the road and didn’t see the car coming. And it was his fault the car slammed into her. He shook his head as he closed his eyes. He needed to get the image of her tears running down her face and her body go flying.
He took a deep breath before walk into her room. A lump grew in his throat as he neared her bed. For a moment he just stood there looking down at her, somehow trying to will her awake. “I’m sorry.”
He took her hand and squeezed it tight. “Olivia I’m so very sorry.”
He tried hard to push tears back as that voice continued to tell him it was his entire fault. It was his fault Olivia was in a coma, and it was his fault she might never wake back up.
It was his fault.
What Truly Matters
To say the last few months had been tense between Peter and Olivia lately would be an understatement. She finally managed to get home with all her memories intact, only to find out the one thing that was making her hold on to her life had slept with her imposter. She didn’t know what was worse; him sleeping with the other Olivia and thinking he was with her or Peter, Mr. 190 IQ, didn’t know it was the other Olivia.
Olivia kept telling herself Peter was an idiot and she was far from being in love with the man, but late at night when she lay in her bed, he was the only thing she could think about. She tried to imagine herself in his place. She could see where he was coming from in a way, but she was still angry, but most of all she was hurt that nobody noticed there was a switch.
One day Peter walked into her office at Walter’s lab to grab a cup of coffee and she looked up at him. “I’m sorry.”
Stunned Peter turned to her. “What do you have to be sorry for?”
“The way I spoke to you.” Olivia got up and walked over to him. “I know if you would have known she wasn’t me you would’ve done everything you could to find me.”
Peter gave her one of his smiles that always made her feel better and without thinking he reached out and cupped her cheek. “I do care about you and I promise if Walternate ever comes near me again, I might have to kill the man for what he did to you. Walter might be crazy, but what he does, he does for love not for hate.”
All the hurt and pain Olivia had been holding in for so long came rushing to the surface and she, without realizing what was happening before it was too late, allowed tears to fall down her face. “Peter,” was all she could choke out as she felt Peter pull her into a hug.
~~~
The next day the atmosphere in the lab seemed a little lighter. Peter and Olivia were talking more and each stole glances at each other when they thought nobody was watching. When they were in the car on the way back from a case, Peter reached out and touched her leg. He smiled for a moment before a cough over took him.
“You okay?” Olivia asked, concerned about her...Peter.
It took a few moments before Peter could suppress his cough and catch his breath. “Yea, I think I’m just getting a cold or something.” But in he wasn’t just getting a cold, it was something far more dangerous than a simple cough and runny nose.
Days passed and Peter’s cough turned worse. One morning he woke in trendiness about of pain. He rushed to the bathroom and just made it in time before he got sick. Once he was finished he sat back and pushed himself back until he could lean against the tub. Every part of his body hurt too much to walk back to his bed.
He didn’t know how long he was sitting there all he heard was Walter calling his name and slapping his cheek. He could hear himself saying something, but even he had a hard time trying to comprehend what he was saying. He kept drifting in and out of conciseness. One point he could swear there were a swarm of people around him but he fell back into the darkness before he could open his eyes to look.
~~~
Peter could hear someone calling his name and even though his eyes felt like lead he managed to open them to look at the most beautiful face.
“Just a cold, huh?” Olivia smiled at him. She was scared when Astrid called her telling her Peter was being rushed to the hospital. She didn’t hear much after that, something about Walter, couldn’t wake, scared, and fever. She jumped from her bed, threw clothes on and rushed to be by his side. When she first saw him she was scared, he looked so pale and weak. The doctor assured them all he just had a touch of the flu and was dehydrated.
Olivia didn’t want to leave his side from the moment she got there. It was the first time since she gotten back that she could feel how much she truly love that man and wouldn’t let him just walk out of her life again.
He tried to speak but no words seemed to escape his throat. He swallowed hard as he watched Olivia hand him a cup with ice chips in them. He sucked on it until it was gone then he smiled at her, “What happened.”
“Walter found you on your bathroom floor incoherent.” She smiled at him. “He thought you got into his...medication.” Both chuckled at the thought of it.
“I’m glad you’re here.”
Olivia sat looking at him for a moment before speaking. “I’m glad too.”
“So when can I get out of here?” Peter tried to sit up a bit more but felt too weak.
“Maybe in a couple days. But you’re not back to work until Broyles feels you’re better.”
“Oh... do you think I could get him to sign on a trip to Hawaii for medical reasons? You could come too- help nurse me back to health.” Peter laughed as Olivia gave him one of her trademark looks.
“Peter...”
~~~
Peter remained in the hospital for a four more days without much improvement. The doctors ordered more test, but Walter was upset. He wanted to run his own. He seemed fearful of what he would find, but Astrid reassured him things would be okay, but things wouldn’t be okay. When all test results were in, it was clear that Peter Bishop was on sick man. The illness that nearly took his life, and took this worlds Peter, was back. It seemed to be worse than what Walter remembered. Everything seemed to be happening at accelerated rate.
“You have to fix him.” Olivia told Walter.
“I don’t think I can.” Walter told her with a heavy heart.
“No you can, you’ve done it before.” Olivia begged the older man. “You did it once before you can do it again… whatever you need I can get you.”
“Olivia.” Walter tried to reason with her.
“You can’t let him die.” Olivia fought back tears as she turned and walked into Peter’s room. She put on her best fake smile as she sat on the bed, taking his hand.
~~~
Two days went by and Peter’s health continued to deteriorate he had been shocked back to life once and the doctors suggested they say their goodbyes. Walter seemed to check out of all realities and Olivia was in deep denial about everything. Astrid stepped out the room to get the pair some coffee when a man entered the room.
Walternate stood there looking at them both. Before Olivia could go and kick him out he told them he could save Peter.
“Why should we trust you?” Olivia stared at the man.
“Because we both want what’s best for Peter.”
“We both go with him.” Walter told him.
“Fine.”
“And you can’t hold us captive. Whatever happens you have to let us all come back, even Peter if he wishes.” Olivia didn’t trust Walternate in anyway, but he was their only hope to save Peter. And she would do anything if it meant Peter surviving.
“Agreed.”
Moments later Astrid opened a door to an empty hospital room.
~~~
In his weakened state once Peter arrived on the other side, he crashed. After what seemed like hours (it really only being fifteen seconds) he was stabilized. Olivia stayed with Peter and Walternate was able to drag Walter off telling him he needed his help to save his son. Both worked endlessly to make a cure for Peter while Olivia held a vigil at his bedside.
A woman walked in the room and stood on the other side of Peter’s bed. “How’s he doing?”
Olivia looked over at the woman. She knew who she was no introductions were needed. She was Elizabeth, Peter’s mother. “No change.”
Elizabeth touched Peter’s cheek, leaned in, and gave him a soft kiss on the forehead.
It was two days before Walter and Walternate returned with a cure. An hour into the medication being administered Peter crashed again, however this time it took nearly half a minute for them to get him back. Both Olivia and Elizabeth were crying by the time they heard the soft beeps of the monitor reading his heart.
Elizabeth had made the first move, she walked over to the younger woman and held her. It was in that moment Elizabeth knew what she needed to do, and no matter how much it would cause her pain, it was the best for her son.
Later that night Peter’s blood test were looking better. He placed his son in a drug induced coma so the medications could have full effect and Walternate told everyone to try and get some sleep. Walter slept on an extra bed in the room, while Elizabeth curled up in a chair next to Peter’s bed. Olivia was going to sleep in the other chair but she wanted to feel Peter close to her, so she dropped down the rails on one side of his bed and curled up next to him. She placed her head against his chest so she could hear his heart beat and placed her free hand on the middle of his chest so she could feel it raise and fall. Before she knew it she fell asleep.
Elizabeth woke a few moments later and smiled. She grabbed an extra blanket, walked over, and placed it on Olivia. She smiled down at her as she moved hair from Olivia’s face.
Walternate walked in and looked at her. “You should get your rest. When Peter is better, he’s going to need you.”
“No. Peter’s going to need her.”
“I don’t understand.” Walternate walked over to his wife.
“Just look...” She nodded to the young couple lying on the bed together. “She loves him Walter. When Peter is better he needs to go back with her.”
“Liz they are monsters...”
“No, if it were reversed you would’ve done the same. Maybe you and him...” Elizabeth pointed at the other Walter lying on the bed. Can figure something out to stop whatever is going on with our world and theirs.” She looked at her husband. “Walter you have to try. Promise me.”
“Okay, I promise.”
~~~
Walternate kept good on his promise. The next day once everyone was well rested, Walter and Walternate worked together and started to figure out a way to stop the destruction of both universes and five days following that day, they figured out how they can slowing bring back life to the universe and even out to un-quarantine and fix the areas they once deemed dangerous.
A week after Peter was given the first round of his treatments, he was deemed cured, and they were going to bring him out of the coma. It took four hours for Peter to start to come around and once he was fully awake Walternate pulled Elizabeth from the room and had Walter, Peter, and Olivia zapped back to their own universe.
~~~
A year later and things on both sides couldn’t be better. Walternate’s universe was almost back to normal, healthy, and alive. He had built a window so he and Elizabeth could check up on Peter when they wanted to.
In Walter’s universe he was still a little crazy, okay he was a lot of crazy; but Olivia and Peter were okay with that.
Olivia forgave Peter for his stupidity and they were closer than ever. That night a year from their return from the other side, the two of them were at a fancy restaurant and Peter was nervous as hell, for in his pocket he had a small black box containing a diamond ring.
THE END
Our Future
Peter could swear Olivia has never looked more beautiful than she did at that moment sitting across from him. He could swear all the moister from his throat was pouring from his hand and no matter how much water he drank there was still that dry lump in his throat.
He whipped his hand on his pants before reaching into his pocket to feel the black box sitting in there. He wondered what her reaction would be. Would she be happy? Perhaps she would be angry for asking in such a public setting.
There was no one moment where he decided he wanted to ask her to marry him. It was everything that had happened between them since they met. Both would go to the ends of the earth in every reality to protect and save each other. It was the two of them who saved both worlds from destruction. They both knew if it wasn’t for each other both realities would have been no more. Together they could do anything and together they were amazing.
There were still Fringe events and people from the other side trying to get over convinced they were trying to save the world, but they were caught and the tears in the fabric plugged. Walter and Astrid still worked on cases when needed but for the most part there were other cases they needed to work on.
Things were better between Peter and Walter, so much he even sometimes calls him “dad”. And it was Walter and Astrid he went to when he first thought about asking Olivia to marry him. Both were excited for him and Astrid even helped him pick out a ring, while Walter thought of a cleaver idea to get her ring size without her knowing.
Now came the hard part, asking her. He wasn’t sure if he was more scared of her saying yes or saying no.
“Are you ready to place your order?” The waiter interrupted his thought.
He motioned for Olivia to go first. After she had finished he ordered his meal.
“We have an excellent white wine this evening, could I get you any?”
“Sure, I’ll take one. Liv?” Peter looked over at her and saw a surprised look on her face.
“None for me, thanks?”
Peter watched her look at him with amazement. “Are you sure you don’t want one?”
“Yea, I’m sure.” She smiled at him.
“What? What’s the matter?”
“You called me Liv...you never call me that.” She seemed to glow as she told him what he did. “I think I like it.”
“Oh really?” Peter smiled at her. “I think I liked saying it.” His smile faded as he thought about what would happen when he proposes. He hoped she’d still let him call her that even if she said no.
“What’s the matter?”
Peter took his hand from his pocket and gave her that deer in headlights look. “Nothing,” he cleared his throat. “Why do you think something is wrong?”
“You’ve been acting strange all night.” He could see the confusion in Olivia’s eyes.
“Sorry, I have something on my mind.” He gave her a reassuring smile. “So how are Rachel and Ella doing?”
“Good. Greg agreed on shared custody. So in the summer, spring break and half of Christmas break Ella is going to go to Chicago to stay with him. Ella doesn’t want to spend time with her dad, but Rachel assured her it would be okay.”
“That’s good. Plus having you for Rachel’s sister has got to scare Greg in some way.” Peter chucked.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Nothing.” Peter took another drink of water and touched her hand. “Look you’re this crazy badass FBI woman. It’s one of your many qualities I love and find attractive about you, but for guys like Greg he might be intimidated .” Peter hadn’t realized he said the l word. He did though- love her. He was crazy, head over hills in love with the woman who sat across from him and it drove him nuts.
Peter was never the one to just stay in one place. He was always fleeing, trying to find the place where he felt he belonged. After all that had happened he realized it wasn’t the place he was looking for that felt like home, it was who. Olivia was the who and he knew no matter where he went as long as she was beside him he would be home.
Dinner came and they ate and talked about whatever topic they could come up with. It was a great dinner between the two of them. Their plates were cleared before Peter knew it and he knew the time was coming soon, but decided to wait until after they left the restaurant.
“You ready to go?” Peter asked.
“Yeah.” Olivia smiled as she watched Peter walk to her and pull her chair out for her.
“Do you want to go for a walk before we head home?” Peter asked as they walked outside.
“That would be great.”
As they walked down the street to a boardwalk Peter could feel her shaking- or at least he thought it was her. “You’re shaking, here take my jacket...” He started to take off his jacket when she stopped him.
“No, it’s okay I’m fine really.”
“You sure?” With a nod of her head they both walked to the railing and looked over at the lights shining on the water. It was now or never...
“Liv...I umm...” He turned to her and looked her in the eyes. He could see she was scared, and he wondered if she knew he was going to ask her.
He smiled as he caressed her check. “Liv...” he pulled the box from his pocket and showed her. “Will you...”
Tears streamed down her face. As she looked at the ring sitting in the box. “I can’t...I want to but when I tell you...you won’t too.”
Peter felt crushed. She had said no. He watched as she opened her purse and took out a baggy and handed to him. He looked at the contents and then looked at her...”This is yours?”
“Yes...”
“Is it...mine?” It was his turn to shake now.
“Of course.”
Peter thought for a moment the smiled and pulled her into a hug.
Olivia embraced the hug for a moment before pulling away. “Are you really happy?”
“I will be on one condition.”
“What is that?”
“Say yes.” Peter smiled at her. He took the ring out of the box and took her hand. “If you want me to get down on my knee I will.”
“No...yes...” Olivia couldn’t think everything was happening so fast in that moment. “No you don’t have to get on your knee... and yes I’ll marry you.”
Peter slipped the ring and her finger and pulled her back into a hug. In that moment his life was perfect and he said the words that have been on his heart for so long... “I love you Liv.”
Olivia hugged back and smiled. “I love you too.”
The Family
The news had come as a complete shock. Olivia was pregnant with Peter’s baby. It had been a complete accident but both were happy about it.
They had come so far in their relationship. The memories and events that lead up to this moment nearly tore them apart for good, were nothing more than a distant memory. They had made it through together. There were moments where they could have walked away, but both were too stubborn too.
Peter had proposed to her that night before she could tell him she told him she was pregnant. There was no holding back on either side; she wanted to be his wife, and he wanted to be the father of her children. Everything was perfect in that moment.
After what seemed like hours of holding on to each other, Olivia broke away smiling at Peter.
“Go ahead.” He knew what she wanted to do.
“Really?” Olivia asked him with excitement in her voice.
Peter gave her a nod. He never knew Olivia could be like this. He knew she had a great smile and how it seemed to light a room, and he knew he laughter was like music to him, but those first couple of years of knowing each other he never got to see this much of that side of her. After his illness had gone away and they returned to this side, he vowed to do try to make her smile every day.
“Hey Rach, I have something to tell you.” Olivia looked at Peter as she bit softly on her lip. “No...” She shook her head while looking at Peter. “Will you just let me tell you?” She laughed. “Peter asked me to marry him... what do you think I said... yes... wait that’s not all... actually... slow down, I’ll call you tomorrow and tell you everything, I just wanted to call you and let you know. Yes alright, give Ella a kiss for me.” Olivia ended the call and placed her phone in her pocket.
“So... does she approve?” Peter joked as he locked arms with her and they headed to the car.
“Yes she’s happy, but not as excited as Ella. I could hear her in the background saying she knew it.”
Peter cocked his head slightly. “She is a very smart girl.”
“That she is.”
~~~
The months flew by and slowly everyone started to find out. The hardest person to tell was Broyles who seemed not so shocked about either news.
Their wedding was small but beautiful. Everyone commented on how Olivia never looked so beautiful. She seemed to float down the aisle. Nothing guiding her more than Peter’s smile.
Days flew by even faster as they neared the due date of the baby. Both had agreed they wanted to wait to find out the gender of the baby, which seemed to annoy Rachel cause she was trying to plan a baby shower for her.
“Who do you plan on inviting? It’s not like I have a large circle of friends.” Olivia tired to reason with her. Rachel however wouldn’t listen.
Rachel, Ella, and Astrid insisted the baby was a girl. Walter would insist it was a boy. His reasoning was that every child born into the Bishop family was a boy. There hadn’t been a girl born in decades. The only way there were Bishop Women was when they married into the family.
Rachel would counteract that this would be a birth for the records because she was sure it was a girl.
Peter and Olivia would just keep quiet about what they felt the baby was. Olivia just wanted to enjoy the moment and Peter loved watching her enjoy it.
He would always remember when she came to him and placed his hand on her stomach and they both felt their child kick. Peter found the whole thing amazing. He had always thought pregnancy was an amazing thing but when it’s your child, carried by the women you love- words couldn’t explain how he felt.
The day came soon enough. Peter woke to Olivia smacking him upside the head with a pillow. “Peter, my water just broke.”
Peter rushed around the room making sure he didn’t forget anything. He was in such a hurry he almost forgot the most important thing- Olivia.
Olivia’s labor was long slightly difficult. She was starting to get tired and the doctors were talking about going in and getting the baby but Olivia kept saying she didn’t want that.
Four hours later the doctor was telling her it was just one more push.
“You said that twenty pushes ago.”
Peter kissed her head and told her she could do it.
“I can’t. Peter... I’m too tired.” Olivia was out of breath and exhausted.
“You can.”
Olivia nodded and Peter supported her as she sat up. Finally after one last push their baby was there. The doctor placed the crying child onto Olivia without a word.
Peter helped Olivia hold onto the baby as the both looked their child over. Both smiled when they saw what gender the infant was.
The nurse took the baby from them to get it all cleaned up.
Peter kissed Olivia and caressed her cheek. “How do you feel?”
“How do you think I feel?”
“Enough said.” Peter kissed her once more. “Thank you.”
Olivia sighed as she looked over at her child. “For what?”
“Everything. “
A half hour later Olivia was settled into her room and she allowed everyone waiting for her to come in. The group was small. Rachel, Astrid, Walter, and even Broyles and Nina came into the room where Peter and Olivia introduced them to their daughter, Elizabeth Marilyn Bishop.
