But when asked, they would probably agree that he serves a vital purpose as the target, however pathetically easy a one, for Raphael's sarcasm.

Thus the importance of Raphael's sarcasm in maintaining the social balance.

(Granted, the display of superior wit was usually lost on Michelangelo. The problem inherent in mocking from the intellectual high ground is that the mocked don't understand it as mockery.)
