You're right, it is deeper than just a satyre on Communism. It is always easy to criticize something, you may throw down a regime or an opponent, but will you bring something better instead?

I really enjoyed the book when I read it and I started digging. Well, Orwell wrote a lot of essays and answered a lot of letters concerning his Farm. And he NEVER said it was really limited to the USSSR.

Unlike you, I haven't done any digging into the background of this book, so you may well be right. I was just going by what I've heard from other people...reading it as an allegory of the USSR seems to be the most common interpretation. But I certainly think it could apply to any totalitarian regime, not just the USSR.
