It's time to picspam Heart of Darkness, our latest installment in the Snow/Charming saga. *g* And, like Red Handed, it's an episode I love. You may get tired of me talking about how much love each episode from here on out since I do completely adore every episode for the rest of the season. Also, I should mention that this picspam is rather LONG one (with six scenes) owing to the bit where I might have gone rather overboard in including Robert Carlyle's scenes. *cough* I regret nothing.
There are a number of story lines, scenes, and parallels I love in this episode, so many that even with six scenes I couldn't include all of them. I love Regina and David talking about the nature of evil and how it is hard to see even if you're looking right at it - I admit it was rather on the nose but Lana completely sold the scene. I love that we finally find out some key information about what Rumpel is really all about and what he is trying to do. I love getting another example of how truly excellent he has become at manipulating events and people. (You'll never convince me that he didn't plan ALL of the Snow/Charming drama right from the forgetting potion to the remembering kiss.) I love the clear parallels they are drawing between Regina and Snow - as Regina fell into evil following the death of her true love, Snow does the same after losing hers, and if Rumpel had wanted Snow to be evil she would be by the end of the episode since he clearly could have given her a weapon to actually kill Regina rather than one which only seemed that way. Evil in FTL is only a short detour away from good and it all comes down to True Love.
For my first scene I chose twisted!Snow going after the poor, little bird. Not only is it a very funny send up of what we expect from the Disney Snow White but it also shows us quite starkly how much Snow has changed. Simply by forgetting she has ever met Charming she has fallen into a spiral of anger and bitterness. True Love is not just for breaking curses in FTL - its presence or absence has the capability of changing EVERYTHING. When you get right down to it, FTL people look like us but they are NOT us in fundamental ways.
Grumpy: Snow? What are you...What are you doing?!?
Snow White: Getting rid of the vermin in this house.

And, on the flip side, for my second scene I chose the recreation of True Love. Snow had a chance of pulling out of the spiral because her True Love is still alive, only forgotten for a while. Also, she had the foresight (or whatever force is involved in True Love) to choose a love who is a man of action. *g* A man who is willing to throw himself in front of an arrow for her - exactly the sort of behavior Snow needed to cut through the potion and reignite her feelings for him. Though it probably helped that the arrow was always meant for him (it always finds its target - Rumpel is very precise in his language), his willingness to actively try to get hit by it certainly helped sell the moment.
Snow White: What do you think you’re doing? Why would you do this?
Prince Charming: Well, because...You said you appreciate...Action more than words. So, now...You’re going to get both. I love you, Snow.
Snow White: But, I don’t love you. I don’t even remember you.
Prince Charming: Well, I don’t care. The only thing I care about is that you don’t forget who you really are. I would rather die than let you fill your heart with darkness.
Snow White: You would really die for me?
Prince Charming: Does it look like I’m making this up?
Snow White: No one’s ever done anything like this for me before. No one’s ever been willing to die for me.
Prince Charming: No one you can remember.

For my third scene, I chose a Mary Margaret and Emma scene. This scene always makes me tear up a bit because Emma is pleading with MM to believe in her and we see that Mary is not having it. She wants to believe in Emma but she already knows she is going to run. Is that the difference between Mary Margaret and Snow White? Would Snow run too or would her faith be strong?
Emma: I promise, I won’t stop until I expose what she’s up to.
Mary Margaret: And how are you going to do that? This is her town.
Emma: I’m working on it. I have faith in you. And now, I need you to have faith in me. Can you do that?
Mary Margaret: Of course.
==============================
*ahem* And now it's time for three scenes of Robert Carlyle for...reasons. This scene is yet another in a series of scenes including Rumpelstiltskin and prison bars but this time we get to see him on the other side offering to help the imprisoned out of their predicament. OF COURSE Mr. Gold is a lawyer. What else would the curse have translated a deal making trickster who believes in the precise use of language into? I seriously love how self-satisfied and pleased the man is here. He has once again made the perfect entrance and everything is going according to his plan.
Emma: You’re a lawyer?
Mr. Gold: Ever wondered why I was so adept at contracts? I’ve been following the details of your case, Miss Blanchard. And I think you’d be well-advised to bring me on as your counsel.
Mary Margaret: And why is that?
Mr. Gold: Well, because the Sheriff had me arrested for nearly beating a man to death, and I managed to persuade the judge to drop the charges.
Emma: Asserting your influence isn’t what’s needed here. We need to find the truth.
Mr. Gold: Exerting influence may be exactly what’s needed here.

This brings us to a parallel scene of Rumpel and Snow where he is just as pleased with his planning and just as invested in her future. Snow has become not simply tough but cold and hard and has done so with amazing speed. Her swift descent into would be assassin indicates the strength of her love for Charming and how large a hole losing it has left in her heart. He knows he has finally found the love strong enough to be bottled - a love strong enough for the curse - and all he needs to do is give her a nudge while somehow letting Charming know he has done so. (Maybe through Grumpy?) And he does all this while dressed in an fabulous long, patterned robe that I completely adore.
Snow White: I want your help to kill the Queen.
Rumpelstiltskin: Now we’re talking, dearie...You have to kill her when she’s on the move. When she’s on her way to the summer palace. Fire the arrow from this spot here, and you’ll be hidden from sight. An arrow fired from this bow will get you exactly what you need. It always finds its target.
Snow White: So, what do I have to do in return?
Rumpelstiltskin: Do? You don’t have to do anything, dearie.
Snow White: Everything comes with a price with you. Last time you took a strand of my hair. What’s in it for you this time?
Rumpelstiltskin: Let’s just say, I’m invested in your future.

Though I also adore it when he removes the robe and we can admire his tight, leather pants. While also admiring Charming's tight, leather pants. FTL is a GOOD place. I chose this scene not only for the leather pants of awesome but also for Rumpel's bitch-slapping of Charming - both verbally as he takes him apart over the potion and physically as he contemptuously smacks aside the sword. (I'll never get tired of him strutting about making snarky comments while smacking swords out of his way as though they were made of paper.) Why does anyone draw a sword on Rumpelstiltskin anyway? What is the point? It's not as though you stand even the slightest chance of hurting him with it. But I suppose all that bravery and gallantry makes Charming even easier to manipulate which Rumpel must appreciate. *pats Charming on the head* I do love his overly noble self. But even more than that I love Rumpel's fabulous, sparkly, cape sniffing self. Heh.
Prince Charming: What did you do to her?
Rumpelstiltskin: What did I do to her? You mean, what did you do to her. You caused her pain. Without that pain, she would never have drank my potion to forget about you. That’s what changed her.
