I just got back from the doctor, and I'm clear to get a mirena!  This is exciting for me because I wasn't sure it would be covered by my insurance (I'm a graduate student at a university in Canada), so I thought I'd include the most important detail first:  if you have Green Shield insurance in Canada, they do cover mirena.  I thought it'd be nice ( Read more... )

I never really understood why some doctors made such a big deal about getting an IUD. It's not even permanent ffs. I'm glad you were able to get it without much difficulty.

THIS!

An IUD is perfect for the "I think you'll change your mind in a few years" mindset. Want to have a baby in two years? It comes out. Five or ten years it comes out anyway, and then you can tell your doctor, "Look, five/ten years ago I had this put in because I don't EVER want kids. I still don't ever want kids. Can we do the damn tubal/Essure already?" Or keep on with the IUDs. Whatever.

Some of the doctors I saw were convinced that IUDs cause sterility, or that they 'become detached and puncture organs'.

I watch this community but this is my first comment. I'm also a student at a university in Canada (hello fellow Canadian!) with Green Shield. I had mirena inserted five months ago and Green Shield wouldn't cover it. They claim not to cover "medical devices". I would double check with your insurance just to make sure they do cover it, and if they do, under what category? I'd so love to get my money back; it was a pricey bugger!

That said, congratulations on finding a doctor willing to give you mirena! I hope it works out for you!

Hmmm...good to know! I believe there are different types of insurance one can have with Green Shield, based on what the pharmacist was saying to me today (At first it appeared I didn't qualify for Guardasil, and the pharmacist speculated it was because of the insurance package our student union had -- different groups get different packages. In the end, it turned out they just had my birthdate wrong). But you can't be too careful, and I have to pop back to the pharmacy tomorrow, so I'll definitely double-check. Thanks!
