Cats: Munkustrap Remembers
Summary: A drabble that came to me after seeing the live performance. Munkustrap would chase the kittens away from Grizabella, but at the same time he seemed angry whenever she was physically attacked. My idea for why.

Munkustrap remembers when she was beautiful.
When the two of them would sing and dance all night, without a care in the world.
Before she fell so far, before she became tainted by her lost dreams and dashed hopes.
Munkustrap remembers when she loved him.
It seems a lifetime ago now, but he can remember it clearly. They would curl up together, exhausted, and make plans for the future. Everything seemed possible, and nothing was out of their reach.
It breaks his heart, to see her now. She limps around the edges, wanting so much to come back to him, but neither can swallow their pride and apologise.
Munkustrap remembers when he was the one to chase her nightmares away.
Now he keeps the kittens away, afraid to let them get too close to his fallen angel. At the same time, he tries to protect her from physical attack. He doesn't know why, but he does.
Actually, he does know why. He just doesn't want to admit it.
Munkustrap doesn't remember when he first started loving Grizabella, but he knows he'll never stop.
And it's tearing him apart.
