It is fascinating. And kind of hilarious. And there are super-interesting differences between US (Harlequin) and UK (Mills & Boon) titles. Capitalism!

OMG, at the pressure of coworkers (they are ALL reading it) and my own morbid curiosity, I'm currently reading Fifty Shades. And when I say "currently", I mean at a rate of about 20 pages a day, because I start reading it and end up bouncing it angrily off the back of the couch and then having to wait several hours to go back to it ( ... )

I read part of it when it was Twilight fanfic and thought it took everything objectionable about Twilight and made it even MORE objectionable. YUCK ( ... )

Legally, she can't sue for a variety of complicated reasons (you can't really copyright plot elements), and my guess is that she's just decided to thoroughly ignore the whole thing.

That's really unfortunate, because I would be pissed if I were SM. I mean, it's one thing to write fanfic, realize you maybe could turn it into your own story, and then do so... but to be so blatant about ripping off the characters? She would have been less skeevy if she'd completely changed up the characters and just had the plot (in regards to the girl meeting the guy who turns out to be an emotionally traumatized sexual deviant whom she eventually convinces to change) stay the same. If it were me, I would have gone in an opposite direction from Bella and Edward to make it 100% evident that this was a different story. Maybe had her be a 30-something ophthalmic surgeon or something who has fallen into a rut and gotten bored with her life, LOL.

In a previous life, I was a private equity wife, and I know a lot about the very wealthy. So the ( ... )
