opening lines

I'm working on rewriting the first scene of Merrin's and my Big Bang (posting two weeks from today, yo!) and am thinking about how it's pretty important that a first scene be AWESOME, because otherwise, hey, readers get bored and they drop your fic immediately ( Read more... )

For me, it depends on the author. If it's an author I trust to deliver a great story, one who I've enjoyed in the past, then the opening line or scene isn't as important as if it's a new author I haven't read before.

Having said that, I have to agree - that first line of yours is one of the best first lines I've ever read. *g*

bwahaha, I fucking ADORE that opening line. \o/ I remember my eighth grade English teacher giving us this whole lesson that I still remember about how the opening line/paragraph is what hooks the reader in. It has to be completely AWESOME. Sometimes I'm conscious of that, other times I'm not... it depends on the story how 'awesome' the line or scene is. IDK. I think it also depends on the author.

In this case I am SO conscious of it right now because I've already tried to rewrite the first scene once and it blew, and now I REALLY want it to be awesome.

HAHA now, because I called attention to it, everyone is going to look at the first line/scene and go, "This is really not that awesome, Kelly! YOU SUCK."

I've never really thought about it before! But I will be sure to stress out about it in the future. THANKS KELLY.
