My mind is apparently a strange, weird place. After how many years of not writing in this fandom, it decided I needed to get this out of my system. Go fig.
Title: Rite of Family
Genre: Xena (I know, shocked me too)
Season/Spoilers: After “To Helicon and Back”
Rating: PG, slight subtext if you want to see it.
Author’s Notes: Those who know me know I haven’t written Xena fic in a long time. They also know why. This came to me and I decided to write it. It was originally going to be a drabble, but ended up at 400 words instead. Um, quadruple drabble?
Disclaimer: I don’t own them, people with a lot of money do. I’m just borrowing them to play and making no profit from this.

“Why didn’t you tell them?” Xena asked as they began walking away from the village.
Gabrielle feigned ignorance. “Tell them what?” she asked innocently. One quick glance to the side told her the warrior wasn’t buying it, not that she was surprised.
“Oh, I don’t know, maybe about the whole Rite of Caste thing and still being a Queen,” Xena said mildly, eyebrow arched.
Gabrielle thought about that for a moment. “Somehow, I doubt I really have a right to serve as the voice of the Goddess to the people any more,” she mused. They had abandoned their Gods, taking most down outright, and removing others from power simply to protect a child. She would do it again in a heartbeat.
The dark haired woman snorted. “The Amazons are less than holy, the past few days should have taught you that.”
Gabrielle nodded, thinking back to their visit. She had spent the days in council with the Queens of the various tribes while the guards kept Xena out of trouble with sparring and training sessions. They had pulled out the scroll, the one signed by Melosa herself, giving Gabrielle the title of Princess of the Amazons. They also pulled out the one written by Ephiny explaining her Regency in Gabrielle’s absence after Melosa’s death. They had entreated her to stay with them, to lead with them, to rejoin those that called themselves her people. She refused.
She looked back, seeing the Queens still standing at the edge of the village, sending her off with honors. She watched as they slowly circled Varia, the young woman elected to rule them all. They were her people, nothing would change that. They had fought together, bled together, and shared their crazy rituals together. She would always be welcomed there, of that she was certain.
Looking ahead, she saw Xena watching her, more than likely knowing everything she was thinking, and more. They had survived so much together, done more than she ever would have dreamed of back as a simple farm girl in Potadeia. They had even died for each other, sacrificed everything for each other. They belonged together, and nothing would change that. The Amazons may be her people, but Xena was her family.
“They have a leader, I have you,” she shrugged. Smiling, she started walking again, away from the village, towards another adventure. As always, Xena was right beside her.
End.
