[Ethan would will never allow Haylie to believe that this is her fault. He'd always respected her chocie not to register, if he hadn't he would have handed her over to the authorities long ago. There was nothing in this world that Ethan wouldn't do for Haylie, and if that meant taking a bullet in this life time? So be it.
The pressure to his wound hurts like hell and Ethan doesn't bother to hide the yelp of pain of the hiss as he tries to keep quiet.]
If I could, I would. [He offers a weak chuckle as he lets his hands drop away from the wound to try and grasp at Haylie's arms as she does what she can. Deep down he knows her gestures are futile.] Haylie. Look at me Haylie. It's not... it's... please Haylie.
[They took her parents. They took her sister. They could take her, fine. Just not him. Ethan's all she has left in this world to live for and if she loses that, then what's the point?]
Just... save your strength, okay? I'm-- I'm-- I'm gonna fix this, I promise. Ethan, just hang on for me.
[Grabbing at Haylie's hands Ethan shakes his head, forcing her to meet his gaze. He knows that this will break her but he needs Haylie to be strong right now.] I'm dead Haylie, my body just hasn't caught up with that just yet. Please, I need you to focus on what I'm about to tell you alright?
You have to make me a few promises. I'm sorry, I don't want to do this to you but I have to.
[Haylie can see the finality of everything when she meets his eyes. Up until then? She's kept it together but it's that look in his eyes that breaks down the first wall guarding her emotional core -- the one that let's loose the first few tears she's been fighting back.]
Ethan, shut up. You're not leaving me! Without you, I have nothin' left.
I've never loved anyone else in my life. I can't-- not without you.
[Daken wasn't the only one who had once believed in the Captain's strength and invulnerability. Ethan too had become so sure that he'd allowed his focus to shift and that had been his biggest mistake. Pride before a fall, as they say.
There's little point in trying to mask the pain as Ethan leans heavily on Daken, feet dragging as he stumbles with him to somewhere safer, more sheltered and private to rest. To die.] Bet you're pissed it wasn't you who got to deal me the final blow huh?
[Ethan coughs rather than laughs, spitting blood to the floor as he groans.]
[Hauling him out of the battle zone, Daken laid down his Captain with more tenderness than it would have seemed the feral was capable of. The smell of Ethan's blood was so strong now, it felt like it was choking him. That strong heartbeat was still going, but slowing a little more minute byt minute. Laying him back down, his eyes held an emotion he wouldn't allow himself to express.] I would have made it a lot quicker.
[It wasn't sadness. He'd seen too many people die to feel that any longer. It was closer to disappointment. Ethan had always been the perfect tool to manipulate and get what he wanted. Daken would be hard-pressed to find another so willing.] If you've got anything to say, make it quick. You don't have much time.
I know you would have f-friend. [Ethan reaches for Daken's hand, even if the feral doesn't want it he needs the contact to stop himself from just losing it and begging Daken to bring the end for him quickly.] K-keep Angel safe, m-m-make sure she is happy an' loved.
[He can feel his heart faltering as it's beat slows, the edges of his vision starting to fade. It's odd how the blood makes his clothing stick to him warm and tainting the air with an iron tang but still he feels the cold creeping in.]
My l-laptop... ta-take it. B-but Daken use it w-wisely, m-minu ga h-ha-na. [His Japanese is poor, mumbled and barely pronounced but he means well. He hopes.]
Y-you are n-not a-a mo-mongrel, y-you're... [The blood bubbles up between his lips and Ethan chokes on it, eyes wide and searching as he clings to Daken in vain. This isn't how he was meant to die, he was meant to grow old and live his days happily married to Angel. Not dying here in the arms of a feral who'd happily have killed him given the chance.]
[Daken nodded, letting Ethan hold onto him even as his ears picked up the sound of his heartbeat stuttering, but still resolutely trying to beat on. The least he could do was honor the requests of a dying man, even if it would have been more merciful to snap his neck instead of letting him continue on his last moments in pain.
He closed his eyes and pressed his forehead against Ethan's in a gesture far more full of emotion than any words could have expressed. He whispered in his commander's ear.]

I know. You're a good man, Ethan.
