[reading aloud from a storybook]

"And at that moment, the train vanished from the tracks." Huh, sounds awfully familiar.

[peeking out from under his book]

Even I know being in a library means being quiet, stupid.

[Bluuuuh, makes as if he's trying to get back to sleep. But he is totally listening in, of course.]

"The ledge shook from the force of the wind, chilled and cuttin' into his skin as though it were made of razor-sharp knives. Still the boy kept makin' his way across the bridge, balancing precariously on its rusted edge. As he reached the mid-point, the boy couldn't help but notice the sensation that he was bein' watched..."

"Decidin' that it would be better not ta look behind him, the boy kept going. As he did, the wind grew colder and the feelin' of being watched grew stronger. He tried to ignore it, but it only seemed ta make things worse. The gusts of wind suddenly felt like strong hands wrapped around his knees, tugging at him to make him fall."

"He grit his teeth and kept on, his legs tremblin' with every step. The end of the bridge was only a few feet away. Swallowin' his fear, he sped up, determined to reach the end, no matter what. Then, right as the boy's foot was inches away from the very last step, he heard a voice from right behind him speak his name."

Doesn't say.

"The boy stood still, frozen against the ledge. The voice sounded like it came from a woman. 'You'd better stop this,' she said. 'Otherwise it's going to turn messy.' He knew who it was--he'd heard her speak to him many times before. Shaking his head, he took that final step... and the ledge underneath his foot collapsed."

That's beginning to just make way too many unanswered questions.

Well, I did start right in the middle of th' story.

"He fell, scrambling against the crumbling pieces of ledge and the cliff face. A large rock jutted out from the cliff, and he knew that if he landed on it the wrong way, it might kill him. But he knew that wasn't gonna happen, no matter what the woman had said. The boy did his best to ignore the harsh cold, the pain in his legs, and grabbed onto the rock with all his strength as he fell. Even as the wind tried to push him off of it, he still held on."

[shrugs]

"Even as the sharp, jagged edges tore at his skin, it was as if the boy could feel no pain. He clawed frantically at the rock to hoist himself up. Slowly, the boy took a deep breath and glanced up. The woman was still there, staring down at him. They locked eyes for a brief second, and then she smiled and shook her head. The boy took that as his cue to start climbing up the cliff. There were no footholds, nothin' to hold onto that would make it easier, but still he climbed. He was determined to make it back up, the woman staring at him all the while."
