Well, I've only apped twice since I returned to CFUD, so I don't have enough for anything to stand out. But I'm pretty proud of my app for Kyou. I feel like I got his voice very well, and I'm happy with the flow/punchline. That's all thanks to my wonderful betas, mind you. ♥♥♥
I have a lot of apps that I really like, and I usually think of them when going for a particular kind of character--usually the ones I find hardest to app/am most picky about, because apps that really impress me for those kinds of characters are more memorable.
For characters who don't (to me) have a really strong voice hook--the ones who talk more like ordinary people, instead of giving heroic speeches, having a real hook to their speech like particular phrases or high enthusiasm/emo, whatever--the strongest apps I remember are Clark's and Fujioka Haruhi. Haruhi is also my go-to for well-used outside references, for her Snakes on a Plane joke.
The other thing that's pretty hard to really impress me with is a well-integrated accent, because I usually find them over-powering but not funny. This is mostly me. But the one that will always stand out as fantastic to me for this purpose is Thor's app, which I would happily marry if offered the opportunity

Actually, since I knew I wouldn't be able to get an in-depth beta reading for Tohru's app because I wouldn't have reliable internet access, I did the next best thing. I went back and saved the advice I got for Takami's app to have close at hand the things I have to watch for when apping, and I also saved a bunch of apps I feel are outstanding examples of apps. The ones I saved were: Sakuraba's, Yuujirou's, Phoenix Wright's, Shin's, Koizumi's, Fujioka Haruhi's, Ichigo's, and a bunch of the most recent batch of counselors, but especially Deapool. I'm too lazy to go find them to link to them, sry. The common denominator in all of them is a strong voice faithful to canon, with camp/internet/even inside jokes that make sense for the character and good flow that keeps you interested all the way through no matter the length

I generally don't consult other people's apps 'cause I suck and also forget them within a week or two after that app period. I would recommend most (if not all) of Zazzle's apps in general just 'cause they're all super strong. Deadpool's and Hiro's apps are both recent ones that use references extremely well.
Out of mine, I like Phoenix's best (and Ishida's second best, but he was WAY EARLY so I wouldn't actually reccommend him for people apping now). Mostly 'cause I worked so hard on that baby. In general, I'd reccommend two things for the app process: a) find betas who will REALLY and TRULY TEAR YOU TO RIBBONS and b) write like you're gonna be in an APP DEATH MATCH with oodles of other people. Especially that latter one. Phoenix's is my strongest app because I though I was gonna have lots of competition -- so I wrote his up at a higher level than I did for anything else.
