I'm a big fan of Countryfile so the book would probably appeal to me. I think farmers can have a bad time but I never saw a poor farmer so I suppose it's subjective. I do agree wholeheartedly that farmers do need to diversify, even the royal farms have had do it. In fact in today's world many businesses have had to just to keep going and not go under.

We are a huge agricultural region here growing lots of produce and there's certainly one big maker of crisps in Ely - Corkers crisps :)

We have two dairy farms near us sporting Cadbury's logos on their external farmyard walls. Guaranteed income I suppose, but vaguely depressing to see, somehow.

I've never seen anything like that. I don't expect it's depressing for the farmers because, as you say, guaranteed income.
